Some decent players DFA’d. (Update: O's claim Lewin Diaz-1B)

I think the Orioles might put a claim on Lewin Diaz, a LH 1B recently DFA'd by the Pirates. 

Bad ML numbers, but 19 homers last year in AAA and 20 the year before. Seems like a left-handed Tyler Nevin but much better defensively at 1B, and I think they'll think he's a guy to bring into camp and try to sneak him through waiver to AAA as a backup 1B option and/or just to improve their 1B depth in the system, which is extremely weak.

His baseball savant numbers are very, very replacement level and for 1B/DH type, not sure that's where you want to spend your 40-man roster spots. Big and slow with a terrible arm, he doesn't bring the plate discipline either. Oh, and he's can't hit offspeed and has almost no chance at left-handed pitching.

In my theory I was seeing it as a claim and DFA, try to pass him through waivers as soon as they need to make a 40-man move. Pure AAA depth.

If Diaz is the only big move we make in the offseason, I will be very happy.

I think it's a good claim, not because I expect him to crack the roster, but because I like him better than Tyler Nevin (better 1B defender, left-handed power). Hopefully we can sneak him through waivers in the next couple weeks.

Yes, if only Diaz could have picked up a HBP his lone at bat he'd have been the perfect player with a 1000 OBP.

Better than Tyler Nevin is about as low a bar as a man can set.

Here’s a two year old scouting report from Eric Longenhagen:

“Díaz is a plus athlete, which is incredible for someone his size, and his infield feet, hands, and actions are all plus as well. He has a low hand load and a bat path geared for hitting breaking balls and low pitches, and over the course of watching him in the big leagues and at length during his time playing for Estrellas Orientales, I’m pretty scared that big league arms will be able to get him out with velocity at the top of the strike zone. You could argue that Díaz is actually in a pretty good position to hit in an environment that looks like it might soon feature more breaking pitches than fastballs, but if pitchers can beat him with topside velo, that’s how they’ll attack him. The low-end outcome here is a career like James Loney 로니‘s, with well-below average offense for the position but great defense. Eric Hosmer is the higher-end version of this.”

I don’t think Miami has a clue when it comes to developing bats, so it’s absolutely worthwhile for us to take a flyer on a guy with that skill set.  I have a feeling that we’ll need to sneak him through waivers though.
