He has allowed WAY TOO many hittable pitches to pass him by being too patient. Once he makes that adjustment, he will be fine. The talent is all there.

Aren't they teaching the hitters that it is OK to not swing at boarderline strikes if they are the type of pitch they can't make solid contact with?

I don't want him swinging at a "hittable" pitch just to top it to second for an easy grounder.

Just because a pitch is a strike doesn't mean it's a good pitch to hit.

They are definitely teaching that  and Gunnar is one of the poster boys for it.

I guess the question becomes should he alter his approach with 2 strikes. Personally I think he's fine and just adjusting to the league.

Some of the pitches that he has let go were not borderline. He even let some get me overs go by early in the counts on more than one occasion. He has to be more aggressive zone at least until his confidence begins to pick up. He's a very bad 2 strike hitter at the moment and he's striking out way too much. It's like when he gets 2 strikes on him now, the only positive approach that we can hope for is a walk, otherwise it's an automatic out. He has fallen behind in the count way too much so far this year.

I don't want him allowing these strikeouts to pile up and get into his head.

First off we don't know his confidence is currently lacking.

Secondly I think the worst advice we can give him is "Hey swing at stuff you don't think you can make solid contact with."

We don't.

I will say, I am not a fan of his body language after he strikes out.

He's clearly frustrated. But at the same time, he's not so frustrated that he won't still take walks. That's kind of impressive to me.

I agree with you.  He needs to hit the pitches he swings at, and maybe be a little less choosy with two strikes.  Meanwhile I’ll take the .365 OBP while he figures it out.

Fair point on #1. But that is a concern of mine. If success breeds more confidence, the lack of success can go the other way.

On #2 - I don't think either of us wants that. But maybe I'm saying that there is a such thing as being too patient and hunting for the perfect pitch.

There's probably threads from last year saying the same thing about Adley, when he was being "too patient". I think Gunnar will be fine.

I don't feel like doing it, but someone should post the stats for Cal Ripken's and Nick Markakis first 60 games in the majors, I know they were awful

They were also very young like Gunnar

It was really Cal Jr.‘s first 41 games that were a struggle.  .118 / .127 / .178 with only 1 BB and 17 K’s, a HR and 4 RBI.

He turned it on in the next 19 games, going .343 / .373 / .500 during that stretch on his way to the ROY award.

    • This.  Baseball is a game of failure, but my goodness these guys went above and beyond in that department. Productive outs shouldn't be that hard.  Watch Witt in the first inning of Game 2.  And while the two playoff games perfectly told the story of the 2024 Orioles offense, I am hopeful that national stage embarrassment provides a real learning experience and motivation for fixing what is wrong with them.  As much as I am sure it hurts to watch your own hand being broken, Cowser should be watching that AB every single day from now until next October. Same thing with Adley channeling his inner Chris Davis and staring at that 2-0 meatball like he has never seen a major league pitch before.
    • Could fit the profile Elias likes of veteran free agents who might be willing to sign for few years at higher AAV's. I love the splitter. I'd be interested. Free agent means no posting fee, correct? Not that it matters.
    • All the talk about facing LH pitchers and needing RH bats to match up - I think it’s a bit overblown. Our approach was terrible and our guys failed to play team baseball just as much against RHP w/ platoon advantage. Guys just consistently failed to do their job.
    • I agree on both parts here. I’ve been reflecting on my love for baseball. Even the postseason helped me realize I enjoy the slow burn of the regular season.  I also am far away from MD and for me Baltimore is part of my cultural roots (both parents from the area). So in some sort of way, like you said, maybe there’s a healthy separation and more tolerance for failure. Maybe even nostalgia, lol. But I’ll take it.
    • I don’t live in Maryland either, but I still have family that are there and most of them are more into the Ravens, yet they send me O’s stuff all the time — which really isn’t a great pulse for O’s fan expectations. I think from the time I lived there until now (which is a few decades), Baltimore is definitely more of a football town. Maybe my family does reflect the times? As for OH and representation, that’s a fascinating question. To me, the OH feels like the place is generally a group of the hardcore of the hardcore baseball fans, with some part timers mixed in. The differences tend to break on personality types (cynics, optimists, realists — and a handful of comedians). If Elias only tweaks a couple things and doesn’t make any fundamental changes (like maybe drafting more pitchers) or pretending nothing can be done about RISP — then any glow about the rebuild will truly fade, at least in my house.
    • The lack of velocity will be issue I think in majors at his age but the secondary pitches must be very good.  It is interesting that in Japan the splitter is like the cutter/sweeper is in MLB.  It seems Asian league goes more for the up and down movement while MLB pitching strategy is the lateral movement of pitches.
