Givens and Tate can’t get here quick enough. However, no guarantee they will be effective right off the bat.

Yeah the bullpen has potential to be really good when/if everyone gets healthy. I think the question becomes who do we send down. Are they ready to potentially lose Voth or Perez?

As soon as I saw him pitching at 97, I knew something was off. I just hope it’s not an injury. He looked terrible last night and it’s a miracle that he didn’t blow it.

That’s the “downside” of winning so many close games… you run your closer into the ground.

Cano should help.  I can’t believe how good he’s been. 162 is a marathon. We have to keep the big guy healthy.

That would be unnecessary if not for the insistence of having a “closer”. Baumann, Cano, Baker or even Coulumbe or Akin as lefties should be considered based on high leverage, workload and matchups.

If the 8th inning brings the opposition’s 3,4, and 5 hitters I’d rather see my best guy then. If he’s locked into only the 9th that can’t happen.

Bautista has struggled with the splitter lately, but he still looks like the guy. A 100 mph FB is a nice thing on which to fall back.

Agreed.  Many of us in the game thread were opining about keeping Akin in before the trouble even started.

Akin gets little love here, but his numbers weren’t helped early on in one particular outing where he was cursed with back to back cheap hits only to have Hyde bring in Baker who wasn’t sharp and promptly allowed a walk and a hit scoring two tins that were charged to Akin.

Akin has always had a good spin rate on his FB and the slider works, while last night the CH looked good.

He's been looking terrible, we're lucky he hasn't blown saves.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.  Will Hyde pull him out of the role if he continues to accumulate Saves while looking less than dominant?

I think most managers will keep their "closer" in the role until they completely melt down.

The closer-by-committee approach is a tricky one to get right; plenty of teams have tried and failed at it. Even the Rays seem to be shifting back to having one guy designated as the closer this year (so far). I do hope that the return of Tate and Givens will open things up to where Hyde doesn't feel the need to bring Bautista in for every three-run save.

He did look bad last night and his velocity was obviously down.  But, at least by my eyeball test, he hasn't had the splitter working the way it did last year.  In the early games I chalked it up to the colder weather, but I think he's still trying to get the splitter working right.  Other than last night, the velocity has been there, so when he get's the splitter working he should (hopefully) be lights out again.

Like he has with Perez? Again, there’s no reason to keep these guys in defined roles. We know the overall range of performance for relievers in general can fluctuate wildly, but managers insist on having closers and, to a lesser degree, set up men.

I’ll say they lose a couple games just based on Hyde staying with him no matter what, like you said, until a melt down.

Was it really down? I mean, I saw 99 and 100.

I wouldn't go that far.

The truth is that massaging egos and keeping players mentally ready to play is part of Hyde's job.

Yes I think that Managers shouldn't structure their bullpen use around the Save stat but demoting a Closer can have an impact.

In fairness, the bullpen has been "really good" so far.

2.74 ERA. Third best in MLB. Better than every team in the National League.

    • If you're going to cry, you could at least be factually correct about the things you're crying about.
    • Agree. Unfortunately, they sucked more when he caught.
    • I was just asking for clarification.  So it seems you're asking for changes that aren't able to be implemented in the off-season and can't be evaluated well into next season. That's fine so long as you're ready to be disappointed this off-season.
    • I don’t think the OH brother ship can be categorized as the “average fan”.    I think posters here are quite a bit beyond. I don’t think the average fan is regularly posting on a fan site
    • Drungo's One Trophy label for the setup of US sports playoffs was new lingo to me recently, and Adley and Gunnar have a long way to go to get near the Active WAR leaders, who also in brilliant careers have zero dogpiles.     Many of them this week we get to see killing themselves for one taste.     Rundown of the top notables, with career rWAR as the top tier of 2024 Clubs begin play today. 86, Mike Trout - his life is his to do with as he chooses, but as a baseball fan I'm rooting for him to go another path before it is too late. 62, Paul Goldschmidt - way past peak.    The 2025 Orioles may be one of few teams with very high playoff odds to want him for a starting role if a Zero Ryan path is charted.    Much more so than any current Oriole, he's been what we hope Coby Mayo might become. 57, Manny Machado - a yardstick of the Dodgers' greatness.    Players like him or Trea Turner or Corey Seager, Andrew Friedman's judgment sometimes is "Nah, not good enough". 56, Nolan Arenado - guaranteed 3/74 on the rest of his contract, perhaps waiting for a buy-side trade.     Declared lame duck GM scenarios are unusual. 52, Jose Ramirez - a player who has devoted himself to one small-market team, and that Club's unquestioned leader, something the Orioles don't have yet.      Some of Adley's teammates and ex-teammates might be salty about recent choices. 52, Aaron Judge - an amazing early 30's peak - problems for the Orioles if he endures like Nelson Cruz or Barry Bonds.    Career health track record has some dings. 51, Bryce Harper - a Manny Machado bookend in my baseball fandom.    They've grown from brash kids to serious professionals - both played much of 2024 less than 100% same as Adley. 49, Francisco Lindor - so close along with Jose Ramirez against the Bryant/Rizzo/Hyde Cubs.     The back strain poetic considering the carrying he's been doing as David Stearns gets ready for his first full off-season running Steve Cohen's club. 49, Andrew McCutchen - nearly the Jose Ramirez of the Pirates.   Nice to see him winding down respectably there.    I'll have generally good wishes for him if he pushes to get to be Paul Skenes teammate for a full season. 44, Giancarlo Stanton - he is upright today, the main thing Brian Cashman cares about.    rWAR has his last 3 seasons worth less than 1 WAR. 43, Shohei Ohtani - one of the greatest players ever has made some choices none of these other greats have to try and tilt the odds in his favor.    His MLB postseason debut is tonight.    Kind of a fun fact rWAR this moment has him at half Trout. It is possible none of these guys escape this list if the Royals or Tigers come through.
    • Rogers 🤮   if we have that rotation I’m betting our win total takes another 5-10 game step backwards
