Hopefully, this is a thread you can subscribe to and check first for a round-up of the day's Oriole news as well as links to the media sources before you hop into the debates going on daily on OriolesHangout.com. Feel free to contribute to this thread as I hope it can be a community effort because it makes the thread so much better. I closed out the "Trade Rumors and Whispers" because the off-season ended and I wanted something with a broader focus. I hope you enjoy, happy reading!

First Post:

Peter Schmuck delivers the first report from spring training. Naturally, the focus is on blue-chip prospect Matt Wieters, who told Schmuck, "It's always good to get started again. I'm looking forward to getting going. It was a short offseason, but it's good to get back and start playing again."

MLB Outsider offers us their Spring Training edition of the power rankings. They rank the Orioles #26 in a league of thirty.

The Orioles have plenty of talent in the pipeline that will soon make them a contender, but even with Matt Wieters nearly ready to assume the big league catcher job, they're still the worst team in the fiercely competitive AL East. Unsurprisingly, it's the O's pitching staff that will hold them back again this season, with unharnessed talent behind Jeremy Guthrie in the rotation, and a largely putrid bullpen. Chris Tillman, Jake Arrieta, and other prospects may soon come to the rescue, but for now, Baltimore sports fans might be better off focusing on the Ravens' offseason.

How is our bullpen putrid? I figure our pen is gonna be plus for us. Maybe these national guys dont understand who is coming back from injury and is expected to help. The guys who dont follow us reguarly dont pick up on some of the finer points.

Peter Schmuck posts the second report from spring training about Rich Hill. Hill is in camp and says,

"Last year was a season lost to injury,'' Hill said. "My back the whole season was never really healed. I never really gave it a chance to let it settle down. It was always go, go, go, go, but getting home and working with some of the trainers, we were able to figure out what the problem is and get it right.

"I don't think there is anything that needs tinkering with my mechanics. I was changing my mechanics because I didn't feel right with my shoulder or whatever it was bothering me. Now that I'm healthy, it allows me to get back to the way I was throwing the ball."

Here are a couple of ex-Orioles links for you this Saturday afternoon:

Garrett Olson looks good in Mariners camp, the Herald reports. His stretching session was "exceedingly impressive." The writer also mentioned that his legs kicks look sharp. Also, his former battery mate, Ramon Hernandez, is in Sarasota with the Reds, MLB.com reports.

I really hope Olson does well. But I hope Pie does even better!

Larry Bigbie speaks to The Sun about steroid use in Major League Baseball. Some highlights:

"This Bogdan guy set me up, that's the part I can be embarrassed about," Bigbie said. "That I became a friend of a guy like this, who did this to me."

In response, Bigbie, who played in Japan last season and likely will play in Mexico this year, said: "What career do I have to protect? He pretty much wiped my career out with what he did to me. If he points the finger back to me, that's because it's his only defense."

Some players wondered what Bigbie, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound professional athlete, was doing with a 5-9, 160-pound regular Joe who was a dozen years his elder. But other players -- such as Grimsley, Sidney Ponson and Tim Raines Jr. -- embraced Bogdan into their fraternity, Bogdan said.

"I had the opportunity to be an everyday player, and I was trying to make the most of it," said Bigbie, who was a .267 hitter in parts of six major league seasons. "Obviously, it is something I am ashamed of."

"I'm not going to sit here and have this black cloud over my head for the rest of my life," he said. "I met a lot of great people, and my life is going to go on. I pulled a lot of good things out of baseball, but obviously I am not proud of what happened."

Zrebiec of the Sun discusses ten questions the Orioles have as they head into Spring Training. The question of everyone's mind - Will the team carry 12 or 13 pitchers?

It seems like such a minor issue, but it carries major ramifications for several Orioles veterans. If Wigginton or Freel prove this spring that they are capable of playing shortstop and backing up Cesar Izturis, that will likely mean that veteran Chris Gomez won't make the club and Trembley will go with 12 position players and a three-man bench of Freel, Wigginton and a backup catcher. It will also allow the Orioles to carry 13 pitchers. If Trembley wants the versatile Gomez on the roster and a four-man bench, it will come at the expense of a pitcher. It stands to reason with Hill, Penn and Pauley out of options, the Orioles could use the extra spot for a pitcher.

Larry Bigbie speaks to The Sun about steroid use in Major League Baseball. Some highlights:

I hate steriods in Baseball. If it was in some meaningless sport like Tennis or Bicycle Racing or Football or Track and Field I could let it go.

In Baseball? Hell no. Like someone said the other day. Baseball is held to a different standard. Nobody makes a movie like "A Field of Dreams" about football.

That said. I do feel some sadness for Bigbie. Roberts should NOT hate Bigbie. He did it himself. Someone was bound to be the one to get nailed once Bonds got the 73 homeruns. After that dork passed MacGwire something had to be done about it.

    • Watched them all. The only one I picked correctly was the win against the Phillies when Eddie overcame his tendency to struggle in the postseason. The loss to the Mets was the most painful because in a 9 month period my teams lost to the Mets, Jets, and Knicks while I was going to college with a bunch of New Yorkers

    • My position has long been that almost every hitter, given enough PAs, will have something around a standard platoon split. Or about 80-100 OPS points worse against same-sided pitching. Yes, some observed splits are much larger than that, but I think that's mostly small sample randomness and the effect of never seeing same-sided pitchers. In an alternate universe where O'Hearn is on the Orioles, shifts are still outlawed, and he plays everyday, he OPSes about .800 against righties and .700 against lefties. And I still contend that, by far, the largest difference between 2018-22 O'Hearn and 2023-24 O'Hearn was the outlawing of shifts. He always hit far worse when facing a shift.
    • I think they would ask…. But getting is another story. I mentioned 4 losses in 14 games. Not breaking the bank for that.
    • Not to nitpick, but the Pirates were up 3-2 in 71. They did come back from being down 2-0, though. The Pirates are the only team from WS opponents that I despise passionately, along with the Yanks and Red Sox in general. I used to hate the Mets, but for some strange, unexplainable reason I lost much of that hate after seeing the movie 'Frequency' with Dennis Quaid. Yeah, I know it's just a stupid movie, but for some wierd reason I can't hate them as much anymore.
    • Six of the top 10 HS prospects on Perfect Game's list are OF.  The most interesting kid on the list is Noah Franco from IMG Academy. Two way guy, re-classed to 2024 from 2025. Seems like a guy how will have enough ?s to fall to 32. It depends on whether scouts see him as a hitter or a pitcher or if he wants to do a full Shohei.  "Noah Franco is a 2024 OF/LHP, 1B with a 6-3 192 lb. frame from Bradenton, FL who attends IMG Academy. Taller and high waisted frame with extra long limbs for the height. Ran a 6.52 in the sixty yard dash. A primary outfielder with really good instincts. Long strides and good routes, working through the ball with a fluid and clean funnel to release. Big arm strength at 96 mph. Lots of feel. Also has good ability at first base and the arm also plays extremely well there. A left-handed swing, the wrists are elite allowing him to flick the barrel with authority late in the process. All fields approach and lift and carry to the process. Hammered balls in game. A left-handed pitcher, loose arm action with big upside and the ball comes out clean and down hill. Ride to the heater when down. Lands the curveball and change up and sequences his three pitch mix well. Excellent athlete and the highest level 2-way potential at the next level. Excellent student. Named to the PG All-American Classic." https://www.perfectgame.org/rankings/Players/NationalRankings.aspx?gyear=2024
    • Yea his asisist last night was impressive. Those are the type of plays that get some recognition, not that a relief pitcher has much of a shot at winning a GG. Seems unlikely even though Cano could get 70 innings again this year.  Make a few more plays like that and then it becomes a situation IMO.
