Bio: The 24-year old right-hander returned from Tommy John surgery and made his back to Double-A (Bowie) for six starts where he was a bit up and down. At 6-foot-6, Young throws downhill and while his fastball doesn't have great velocity, he does get some swing and miss on the pitch. You can sit 90-93 with his fastball, but can move it around the strike zone though he uses it well up in the zone.

Young's best pitch is his change up that he's not afraid to throw right on right at times. When it's on, he gets good fade and drop and he can throw it enough for strikes that hitters have to be aware of the pitch. His curveball is a big 12-6 pitch that he struggled to land for strikes and it rolls up there a little too much. His slider is a get me over pitch that works more like a cutter.

Young's stuff wasn't very crisp on his return, but that's not surprising coming off the surgery. The hope is after a full offseason he'll return to the 4-pitcher starting pitching prospect. If you squint hard enough you can see a 4-pitch back of the rotation starter.

@Tony-OH now that the top 30 is complete….how many guys did you consider having in the top 30 and how does that compare to previous years?

I had a bunch of guys in and out of the last five spots. But honestly, it's not that I loved that many guys, but more because I wasn't thrilled with my options.

Really after 25 you can start throwing guys in very large bins.

I went round and round with Young, Pinto, Pham, Gilles, Wells, Sharkey, Chace and D. Cruz for this last spot but ultimately think Young has the best chance of size and stuff, especially the change up for such a big guy. But if someone wanted to argue for the others guys I mentioned and probably ten more I could build a case as well.

I'll be writing brief synopses' for those guys, probably out to 75 again.

I went away for a few days and just caught up with prospects 19 through 30. What stuck out to me in the whole top 30 was two things. First was all of the international prospects. I take that as a positive sign. Second was the list from 21 to 25. A lot of those guys are guys that I had hoped would be much higher. For various reasons, they struggled. So overall, this list looks like it has less depth to me than last year, but with more possible upside from the international guys.

I’m looking forward to those write ups.  Two names I thought I might see are Deivy Cruz and Alex Pham.  Cruz at 19 made 26 appearances (19 starts) in the Carolina League and threw to a 3.62 ERA and 9.6 K/9.   Pham at age 23 made a good case to be our MiL pitcher of the year while posting a 2.57 ERA and 10.4 K/9 across A+/AA.  He’s not an imposing guy but he gets results.

What's up with Brandon Young?

Out of nowhere (#30 prospect above... undrafted?) he goes 3 IP with 0 hits or walks, and 7 Ks, throwing an otherworldly 26 of 31 pitches for strikes, in Bowie's game today.

He was signed in the Covid year when they only had a 5 round draft, which is why he was undrafted.  Was showing promise bur tore his UCL in 2022.  Pitched a little last year, this is his first full year back.  Nice to see the good outing.

I noticed that line in the box score too and had to look him up.

    • You are the one who made the outlandish statements that JH could squat 800 pounds and the Williams sisters are the Tiger Woods of their era just because their dad trained them that way. The Williams sisters were good because they overpowered their female counterparts due to the fact that they were bigger, stronger, faster. And we all know why but I will leave that unsaid.  But needless to say it would be like a 20 year old male playing against a 15 year old male when it comes to them. But in no way shape or form were they more talented female tennis players of all time.  And this is what I am saying about JH despite your obvious bias.  I want JH to be a superstar.  Best player ever.   But I really think he had a huge advantage compared to other kids his age because he was groomed, for lack of a better word, to be a baseball player.   He is obviously a good athlete.  I just dont see elite.  Therefore I think his ceiling is limited.    But in no way do I see elite from him.  In fact his younger brother looks way more athletic to me.    In fact based off this year if you can trade him for a top pitcher?  I absolutely would.
    • What are we fixing?  The bullpen isn’t broken it is very solid and has been most the year minus about a 10 game stretch.  Could we use another back end guy sure but that is more reinforcements than fixing something.   The Orioles bullpen.   Webb  1.05 whip 1.72 ERA Suarez 1.05 whip 1.61 ERA Cano 1.22 whip 2.37 ERA Coulombe .62 whip 2.42 ERA Kimbrell .95 whip 2.59 ERA Tate 1.23 whip 2.45 ERA Perez 1.13 whip 3.86 ERA Aiken 1.19 whip 4.13 ERA.     They will add another high leverage guy to replace Aiken most likely and depending on Coulombe injury maybe another lefty but for everyone expecting a huge turnover you are gonna be disappointed because the guys we have are just as good as the guys who will be available.
    • My Dad still makes me go to the field every day to work on fielding hitting and throwing. Says I need to hustle like Pete if I’m gonna be better than the next guy. I love it and work just as hard as I can. Then do extra later.    I have BP 325 DL 600. And when I bowl, the Turkeys Fly!!!! I don’t understand why I haven’t made it yet. It’s because my wife isn’t hot enough isn’t it? Or maybe it’s that I need to hustle like Pete did in the 1970 All Star game, not “hustle” like Pete is today.
    • Rutschman is probably the poster child for our increasingly free-swinging ways.  There was a little blurb in Dan Szymborski's chat regarding his free swinging ways, and Dan felt like it was a conscious decision to swing at more marginal pitches.  I took a more careful look at the swing/take data and I think the data does support that, and I think Rutschman is overall a bit more valuable swinging away at marginal pitches.   You can see the change in his swing decisions on pitches in the shadow zone.  He's actually making solid contact with these pitches at a high enough rate that it's been worth it to lose some plate discipline.
    • So you can post things about me like "Please stop talking about you.  No one gives a f*** about anything to do with your life, your bowling ball, your wife or anything else you try to pat yourself on the back about.  Your life is meaningless to the rest of us.".   And you said how dumb I am.  When I hadn't mentioned ANY of that in the post that you were responding to. Nothing.    I was talking about ORIOLES.  But I can't reply to any of that?  I never get personal until I am got personal with. You went there. I will tell you what....sports guy.  Post your pic.  Any pic. I will post mine....and I have...it is right in my avi. Because I know exactly what you look like. My guess is that you never will.   And we all know why.
