Why not try and snag an arm in the rule 5?  Not glamorous enough?  What relievers are drafted/signed and turned to relievers before AA/AAA ball?  Ben Joyce?  So everyone is a failed SP. Either because of injury or performance. So why not take a flier on an arm when upper level pitching depth is a weakness of our org?

We might never guess the player, but I think we can see that RH P is a need for us at the top of the system. The Yankees have a nasty bullpen. If they’ve been delaying converting a SP to a reliever then we should be all over that. That’s not being poor. That’s being smart, but we are poor.

Not poor, cheap.

I don't care for the lack of flexibility,

The Orioles took Andrew Politi last year when they were expected to compete, so I could see them taking a flier on a potential bullpen arm if they're intrigued enough by them.

I just hope if they do they come with more upside than a Politi-type. I never understood that selection since there really wasn't a ton of upside and the stuff was just "bleh".

I don't ever research these guy prior to the draft, especially now that the Orioles will not be picking until late in the first round. They did of course find Tyler Wells in the second round so sometimes there's a diamond in the rough, but that was also after COVID cost teams a chance to look at minor league players for a year and why the Twins may have thought Wells would not be selected or was too raw to stick.

100% they will select someone. I was having trouble remembering who our selection was last year - Andrew Politi.

He ended up toiling in AAA Worcester with a 4.45 in 58 innings as a reliever. He did not show the same low WHIP/high K numbers that he did in his AA-AAA stint the previous year, which is what got him selected by us, one would assume.

This is what I think. They might pick some guys just to evaluate them for a few weeks, send them back and then trade them Ramon Urias, etc for them later

Ok.  This is the guy.  Tobias Myers.  We drafted him in the 6th round and traded him to TB.   He struck out 146 in 117 IP in 2021 between AA and AAA but only had a 3.90 ERA due to 28 homers.  The Rays then trade him to the Guardians for Junior Caminero (ouch!).

2022 is a complete lost season. 7.82 ERA. 76 IP, 51 BB, 54 K.  He must have been hurt.

2023 he’s with Milwaukee now and back in AA. Poor overall numbers but 168 K in 137 IP.   He goes up to AAA at the end of the season.  2 appearances.  3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 7 K.  0 runs.

Here’s a guy who has almost exclusively been a starter in the minors.  He’s always K’d a lot of batters.   Worth a look as a bullpen piece. Here’s a scouting report from BA a couple of years ago.

Caminero.

Scouting Report: Myers in 2021 saw his stuff tick up, as his fastball sat around 93-95 mph with some of the biggest vertical movement in the minor leagues. His best secondary offering is a mid-80s breaking ball that he calls a cutter. He also mixes in an above-average changeup and a big curveball. His stuff all plays up thanks to his plus control. Myers is a little undersized at 6 feet, 193 pounds, but his combination of stuff and control makes for an intriguing package. He has a starter profile, though his stuff would also play in relief.

If you’re a team like Oakland wouldn’t you at least pick this guy and take a shot?

Baseball America

Asa Lacy, LHP, Royals

This would take a rebuilding team willing to take a risk. Lacy did not pitch in an official game in 2023, and his last month of the 2022 season saw him walk 11 in just 4.2 innings while posting a 23.14 ERA. He’s battled back and shoulder issues, and it would be hard to believe he’s ready to help an MLB team. But with all of that said, Lacy was the fourth pick in the 2020 draft. And while he didn’t pitch in an official game this year, he looked good in a brief instructional league appearance.

I feel like Haskin is pretty much gone but I don’t really think he’ll be missed either.

I don't think he'll be gone, but it's a possibility.  It would be nice to have a Mckenna up/down replacement for three option years.  Mckenna is out of options this year.  Mullins and Bradfield are both LH.  Elias and Co. decided that was a luxury to add to the 40 man.  If he doesn't get selected this year, then he would be good depth going forward unless he has another tough year.

    • Do you seriously think that the Tigers are going to give us one of the best pitchers in baseball plus for Jackson Holliday? If so, you seriously devalue starting pitching or overestimate our chances with the rotation we have as is.
    • I’m sure this has been discussed somewhere in this thread, but what would it take to pry one of Seattle’s starters?  Starting with a package of Mayo and Norby— would HK + be enough as headliners?  Too much?  Seems like a good fit as they need major league ready (young) bats. But I wouldn’t trade Mayo + Holliday.
    • I don't believe so but I saw this when perusing the 'net https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/07/02/orioles-camden-yards-renovations-architect-builder-selected/
    • For the record, I don’t want to trade any of them and is this under the circumstances of gun to my head and I’ve already told them “give me the bullet, I’ve got life insurance!” and I’m STILL somehow being forced to pick. In that scenario, RZNJ said it best in that you can’t teach size and I can’t turn down the tantalizing prospect of the middle order mashers.
    • Why wouldn’t they be? Unless you believe that Rubenstein needs to use the franchise as a cash grab like John Angelos did. Money should be available and then some, as well as the motivation/will to actually win a World Series. Rubenstien stated that as a goal since his arrival. Angelos (the son) NEVER spoke in that fashion, balked at the mere mention of resigning young elite players, and most spoke of non-baseball related issues when talking to the media. Seemed he was interested in everything but the team actually winning a championship.
    • Lol!  Correct, dude! I'm not against anything.  I just feel like maybe the expectations are a little higher than they need to be.  We don't need a number one SP - I mean, it would be great, but the value/cost at this moment would be bad, imo.  So I think there's the chance he's shopping at Ollie's.  Nothing wrong with that to me.  I'm just wondering if there are targets out there that someone is familiar with that would cost little instead of the guys being talked about - top prospects, Kjerstadt, etc. Other than Buddy Groom, LOL, there are no answers.  Fuji was almost equivalent to what I'm talking about here.  I just don't know who as I don't watch games around the league as I know many others here do.
    • Mayo.  His 2024 numbers are incredible, so you’re selling high as far as prospects go.  But his defense is a question mark and as this year shows, he has the least clear path to the majors of the group. Some of that is because of his age relative JH and SB, but it’s clear that JH and SB have clear rolls on this team once they are ready.  Mayo’s path is less clear.
