2024 International signing class tracker

Recommended Posts

I have a hard time getting too excited over these signings. It's not because I'm not happy about them. I am. I'm thrilled that they seem to be building an legit international pipeline.

But it'll be 2 years before we start to hear anything about these guys, at least. Two years ago we signed Tavera. I still know next to nothing about him.

I'm not complaining, but Tony's reports on players in year 2-3 after they're signed are usually the first time I get a sense of who might be good.

The BP podcast accompanying their Top 101 release had a fun observation in this spirit regarding their top 3 of Holliday-Langford-Caminero.

As recently as 2021, they were a prep with a 2nd-3rd round grade, the 3rd string catcher on the Florida Gators, and traded for Tobias Myers.

A few quotes from Sánchez and Garcia in this Melewski post.  I particularly like this from Sanchez:

“In all honestly, I would watch videos of the big league team and the big league environment. And that would get me really excited,” he said. “They played with a lot of passion and a lot of heart up in the big leagues. When I saw that it got me really excited, and I wanted to be a part of this.

“I am really, really happy to just be a part of this system and that once again the Orioles gave me the opportunity to be a part of this organization. I know they will be able to help me do what I need to do to make it to the big leagues one day.”

I hate "X" Twitter!!!  Half the time when I click on the link on my phone, it says "something went wrong" and I can't ever open the link. Elon Musk ruined Twitter.

I just keep hitting their logo trying to close out the page 🤷‍♂️

Only 4 of 19 (21%)pitchers.  I know you gotta go for the athletes but I thought for sure we’d see more pitchers signed.

Last year 9 of 27 (33%)were pitchers.  When I have time I’m going to look at the attrition rate of these guys.  I’m curious the percentage that make it to affiliate ball.

They tend to sign pitchers later in the year.  The Astros model and what many teams do now is look for pitchers who didn’t get signed as 16-17-18 and look for late bloomers.  Christian Javier, Luis García, and Framber Valdez, I believe, were between 19-20 when signed.

May be a down year for pitchers.  I heard that only 2 of the top 50 signed were pitchers and the highest was 25.

We'll be able to stalk the Dodgers on any emerging properties that want their bonus this summer rather than next winter.

The Astros success with Framber, C. Javier, Urquidy and Garcia for me was really the driver that kept them going when Cole and some of the other first wave guys left.     I feel sure Latin America has a lot of 17-19 year old pitchers whose talents weren't readily apparent when they were 13-15 to get pipelined to somebody.

    • I’d prefer they trade value to get a starter from a team like Seattle. If Seattle hopes to be competitive in the playoffs they will need to find some more offense.
    • He didn’t execute it last night but Mullins tried to bunt last night. I hope we see him trying to do more of that.  I know teams will try to take it away often but when he has the opportunity to do it, I hope he tries because he’s an accomplished bunter.
    • Print the playoff tickets! Sorry, old habits die hard. 🙂
    • At #22 if Rainer or Bonemer are there you might consider what their respective $ numbers are and see if you can go underslot. This may work better for Bonemer (committed to UVA) than Rainer (committed to Texas) in the era of NIL.  If either Griffin or Morlando fall to #22 I would take them. I doubt that happens, however. Another consideration is to go with a toolsy HS OF at 32. 6 of the top 10 HS players on PG list are OF. I like Noah Franco from IMG Academy at 32. "Noah Franco is a 2024 OF/LHP, 1B with a 6-3 192 lb. frame from Bradenton, FL who attends IMG Academy. Taller and high waisted frame with extra long limbs for the height. Ran a 6.52 in the sixty yard dash. A primary outfielder with really good instincts. Long strides and good routes, working through the ball with a fluid and clean funnel to release. Big arm strength at 96 mph. Lots of feel. Also has good ability at first base and the arm also plays extremely well there. A left-handed swing, the wrists are elite allowing him to flick the barrel with authority late in the process. All fields approach and lift and carry to the process. Hammered balls in game. A left-handed pitcher, loose arm action with big upside and the ball comes out clean and down hill. Ride to the heater when down. Lands the curveball and change up and sequences his three pitch mix well. Excellent athlete and the highest level 2-way potential at the next level. Excellent student. Named to the PG All-American Classic." https://www.perfectgame.org/Rankings/Players/NationalRankings.aspx?gyear=2024
    • What are we talking about here, that heavier baseballs thrown slightly slower will not really be any harder or different for pitchers, because there a lot of QBs who can throw 60? While the energy is comparable, I think there are a lot of variables not accounted for here. Like, the pitching motion is substantially different from a QB's throwing motion. I'm guessing the QB takes a few steps, he's not throwing from a mound, he probably uses slightly different muscle groups. Also, QBs throw at something less than max effort a large percentage of the time, at least outside of combine drills for max velocity. I think it's very much an open question as to whether a heavier baseball would impact injuries or fatigue. Although I'm not quite sure which way. My own datapoint is that trying to throw a very light whiffleball at max effort for very long hurt my shoulder a lot.
    • You’re allowed to have that opinion, but in this instance I wanna see some checks handed out from Rubenstein. The t shirts is a good gesture and a good PR move. Let’s see him spend some of our profits for a WS.  I also agree that Scherzer is a big move for the postseason, but it’s only those 10-12 regular season starts. Which are all huge btw.
