There's something about Detroit.     The weekend before the Adley debut, I think we got a near bottom of the barrel one when Hays and Mountcastle were both out.    Skubal and Eduardo were winning, Gregory Soto was saving.

Urias, Odor, Nevin, McKenna, Bemboom and Owings 4-9.

First 3 times through we'll do better than 0-for-26 with a walk...I think.

Gerrit opened the door for Burnes to put it back to 2.

I feel the O's will get at least 3 hits today.  Overly optimistic?

Say what you will about Mouncastle's consistency at the plate. Compared to anyone else on the team he's by far our best fielding 1st baseman. Not even close. Every short hop with O'Hearn is an adventure.

It's amazing to me how many folks think that it's easy to be a good first baseman.  This ain't beer league softball.  O'Hearn isn't good, Mayo isn't good right now.

Here's the lineup going forward, IMHO:

Against Righties

  • Gunnar - SS
  • Mullins - CF
  • Santander - RF
  • Kjerstad - DH
  • Cowser - LF
  • Adley - C
  • O'Hearn - 1B
  • Holliday/Soto - 2B
  • Rivera - 3B

Against Lefties

  • Slater - LF
  • Gunnar - SS
  • Santander - RF
  • Adley - C
  • Rivera - 1B
  • Kjerstad - DH
  • Cowser - CF
  • Holliday/Soto - 2B
  • Mayo - 3B

At this point, you just don't start Eloy. You give him PH opportunities here/there, i.e. when O'Hearn is facing a lefty, for example. And you have to stop starting O'Hearn so much, especially in the field. I get it, Mounty isn't here, but you can give those opportunities to Rivera.

When Ramon is back, I think you need to cut bait w/ Eloy, although knowing Elias, he'll probably option Mayo.

It really seems like Holliday and Mayo are non-factors for this year's team.

Unfortunately Holliday and Soto bat from the same side so there is no natural platoon there. I think you pick the best one and right now that is Soto. You could maybe play Holliday some vs LHP but that isn't going to be great for him.

Based on pinch hitting for Kjerstad yesterday, I see zero chance they will start him vs LHP.

Urias and Westburg need to replace Mayo and Rivera ASAP and would be a nice upgrade. Could Westburg lead off vs LHP when he comes back? I don't love Slater there.

I think Adley should move back up once he sustains his norms for a bit.

I generally agree with this. However, Mayo reportedly got extra pre-game practice at first yesterday and when he entered the game he played 1B with Rivera sticking at 3B.  So those positions could be flipped in your left pitcher lineup.

I'd love for Mayo to get reps at 1B.
