Should we offer him something to stay with the organization till after recovery and see how he is?

It's not a terrible idea.  Minor league deal for 2025 with a low-priced team option for 2026.  Could be a chance we get him down the stretch next year and have him fairly cheap the following year if the 2nd surgery goes better and he gets back to form.

Means is an awesome dude, really pulling for him.

Like access to their rehab facilities?

Sure.

I guess he will have the not an employee of the organization thing happen when the contract expires after the season.

Too far in the weeds for me to know, but I hope something in the CBA provides Means access to something more than home cooking his rehab come Thanksgiving.

I was thinking the same thing.  He will do his rehab as a FA w/o a team - fairly unique. A cheap 2 year deal (league minimum)  would be a fantastic gesture and a solid low risk depth move.

Someone will sign him to a cheap deal and take a chance he can come back.  I would have no objection to it being the Orioles.  Of course if it happens someone here will just accuse the new management of making cheap acquisitions.

I think the players agents organise treatment for players without contracts.   Setting up places to workout.  Lots of unsigned players used their old High School facilities.

I think the O's should consider matching and upping what other teams might be offering.  It might only be a minor league deal.  Even if the prognosis is really good I doubt the O's do anything like a qualifying offer, but bringing him back on a small deal makes sense.

Bummer that it's a full TJ, which is a longer recovery than the brace. Hope it works out for him.

It sucks, he only got 44.1 major league innings out of his first surgery. Maybe the fact that they were very good innings helps make sure someone takes a chance on him.

It'll be almost 5 years post no-hitter by the time he can take a big league mound again.

Elias sounded like he’s interested in figuring out a way to retain Means:

“This is not career-ending. We're going to get him back in good shape. But this surgery takes time."

Means, 31, is a free agent after the season, further clouding his future in Baltimore and in baseball. He signed a two-year, $5.925 million contract in May 2022 and avoided arbitration in January by agreeing to a $3.325 million deal.

"I think the first step is taking care of this and we're going to support him and we have a long relationship and he's a special member of this organization, just given everything that he's done," Elias said. "Obviously, we talk a lot, so I'm sure we'll be dialoging with him as we get him back on his feet medically. He's going to make it back. He's a big, strong guy, and once he gets this elbow injury fully behind him - which hasn't really been the case, it seems like, going back into last year - I think he's got a lot of really good pitching ahead of him."

    • I apologize, I was a bit rude with the way I responded.  Anyways, I think you are looking at this the wrong way.  He's handed a 3-1 lead and got the first batter out in the 3rd.  Then Urias makes an error.  Then he implodes and gives up 4 runs.  Just cause they are unearned doesn't get him off the hook.  He turned a 1 out base runner into a 4 run inning.  This is your ace and he has been bad all month and he came up small again.  And he can't control the running game either, he allowed 4 SB.  Usually his inability to hold runners doesn't matter because he doesn't allow many base runners but that's not been the case this month and it is really hurting the team.  Later in the 5th inning he allowed a lead off hit from the #9 batter on a 0-2 count.  Next Ohtani singed a ball at 108 MPH but thankfully it was right at O'Hearn who dropped it and didn't turn the DP but still got an out.  That easily couldn't have been a double.  Eventually his inability to control the run game combined with Gunnar's error led to another run.  So I'm not saying it's all his fault, but just pointing out that just looking at his outing with the 5 unearned runs is not looking at the whole picture And btw, I am not closing the book on him this season because I still believe that he'll turn it around.  But it is frustrating to see him have another outing like this.
    • 1-3 with an 8+ ERA in August. 45 baserunners allowed in 25.2 innings. If he's battling an injury then he needs to go on the IL. If he's healthy then this stretch is probably going to cost him several years and tens of millions of dollars on his next contract.
    • I vote for this.  At least for one start.   I wouldn’t use Burnes at all during that time. See if a full week off helps Burnes any.     Burnes’ time here is almost over.  Who cares what he thinks
    • The Nats young players are also  playing with a lot less pressure than the Oriole players.  Everyone wants to call up all these prospects but this is what you get with youth sometimes.  Who has been the Orioles best hitter down the stretch?  Ramon Urias the veteran who several people here wanted to run out of town for the Holliday’s and Mayo’s.  Holliday and Mayo will most likely be better players eventually but not right away.  Westberg was one of the most consistent young hitters for this team this year and he has really been missed.  Let's tread water and get healthier and get to the playoffs and see what happens.
    • Have Young pitch in place of  Burnes on his next scheduled start.  Give Burnes some time off.
    • Let Brandon Young have a couple of starts in his place for the next 2 starts and put Burnes in the bullpen.  Can't be too much worse, because Burnes starts have been almost automatic losses lately.  I don't know if Burnes will have a meltdown if he's sent to the bullpen.
    • With Adley also disappointing, the top jewel from the farm may end up being the 42nd overall pick.
