Brandon Hyde 2024

Recommended Posts

Terrible, terrible game management by Hyde tonight.  Stupid pitching and bullpen management, idiotic pinch hitting decisions, way to worried about lefty/righty matchups that backfired many times tonight.  This loss is squarely on his shoulders.  He's overrated as a manager, Manager of the Year award was/is a joke.

I’m not able to watch any post game press conference, so I’d be grateful if someone would post any explanations that are given for the inexplicable moves tonight.

There won't be any as the media won't ask him anything and the explanations he will provide himself will be the same tired stuff as always.

Apparently they want the manager to not give a guy a chance after 2 games. The hell with his entire career.

After that performance I’m sure he will be backed off.

Nobody is saying to not give him a chance. But you see how he uses Kimbrel when he’s backing off his high leverage usage.

If the situation is truly that high leverage that you have to matchup with a LHH with 2 outs in the 6th and replace a guy that you trusted to face the hottest hitter in the MLB, then maybe you don’t bring in Soto? The guy who was absolutely terrible in his only other appearance.

And if Soto is being brought in because you’re thinking it’s a lower leverage spot, again why not just stick with the guy you just trusted to face the hottest hitter in the MLB and who had thrown 10 pitches.

I think Soto will probably be fine and I have more ire towards Urias for his brutal AB there than Hyde for the PH decisions, but the Soto decision makes very little sense. If you see that as a high leverage spot, you don’t bring in Soto and if you see it as low leverage, there’s zero reason to remove Smith in that situation.

I'm usually a Hyde defender...and I really don't care, I'm going to defend him in a little bit here.  But tonight was pretty awful, all around.  Going by the book, being a slave to matchups all the time...it's a bit much.  I get it, you've gotta see what you've got in Soto (to see if he's really that bad, it looks like he is) but Burch Smith has been excellent.  Cowser has been hitting great lately, Holliday is hitting piss missiles all of a sudden like it's batting practice....I don't care about the matchups, I don't care about lefty/lefty or whatever the hell...gotta ride with the hot hands.  Cowser looks to be a piece of the future, he's gotta hit lefties eventually.  Holliday is in the same boat.

So I get the Hyde criticism tonight, I really do.  But if those moves work out, no one here is saying anything.  I've said it before, I'll say it again, the easiest things "fans" can do is grumble when a move is being made that they don't like and then pile on when that move doesn't work out.  Yeah, it's easy to say that he shouldn't have brought Soto in when we all know that a lefty/lefty matchup is advantageous, so don't pretend that the matchup couldn't favor Soto (especially against Varsho who isn't a great hitter).

Agree that hindsight is easy but these moves (all of them) before they were made defied logic.   It's one thing to go with your best talent and lose.  In each instance tonight Hyde played his worst option available.

It’s Steve Melewski asking the hard hitting questions. Soooooooo…….

Melewski DID actually sort of ask him the question. Good for him!!!!! Complete non answer from Hyde but good for Melewski for asking the question.

For example if he brought in Kimbrel early - risky but defensible.  Let Holiday hit (questionable maybe) against a tough LHP but roll the dice with a hot hitter.    Hit Mayo for Urias if you prefer the matchup.  Let Cowser hit against LHP.  etc

I mean Cowser does have a .719 OPS against lefties this season anyway it's not like he can't hit them.

    • I would have loved Mayo to get reps at 1B in 2023.
    • I'd love for Mayo to get reps at 1B.
    • I generally agree with this. However, Mayo reportedly got extra pre-game practice at first yesterday and when he entered the game he played 1B with Rivera sticking at 3B.  So those positions could be flipped in your left pitcher lineup.
    • Forget .300, the O's don't even have somebody hitting 285. Gunnar is the closest at 282.  You look around the AL competitive teams, here are their hitters batting 280 or more: Yankees: Judge (321), Soto (285) Red Sox: Yoshida (290), Wong (287), Duran (287), Refsnyder (284) Twins: Correa (310), Miranda (292) Royals: Witt (331), Fermin (286)...Perez is close at 275 Astros: Alvarez (308), Diaz (301), Altuve (301), Pena is close at 271 The Tigers have none. The Mariners have none. The best hitters AVG wise on the O's this year:  Gunnar - 282 Westburg - 269 Mountcastle - 265 Adley - 254 O'Hearn - 254 Cowser - 242 Santander - 241 Mullins - 233 And it's not like this team is a patient team.  I think the issue here is the young guys are doing what young guys do. They struggle. Cowser was gangbusters, then bad, then gangbusters, then bad. Holliday was bad, gangbusters, now he's bad. Mayo has just been bad. And the top of the lineup rarely hits on all cylinders. It's like 1 of them hit each day and that's it.
    • I was shocked when he wasnt claimed the first time so good news for him that he gets to continue pitching in the MLB I guess. Elias clearly only saw him as AAA depth at this point .
    • Would have much rather kept Irvin in the system over Burch Smith or Kimbrel. I hated when they DFAd him the first time, and disliked it a second time.  It wouldn't shock me to see Cole Irvin have a longer, effective career from here on out than Trevor Rogers, for example.
    • I understand keeping Kimbrel as a face-saving move. But why Smith? Is he a guy you want to use with anything on the line? Is there a belief he can be made over to help after this year?
