What if we find out down the road that the decision wasn't even made by Elias.  What if Rubenstein is meddling and made his first big decision and told Elias to call him up.

That would suck but I do wonder if Rubenstein said something like, we will spend to get an extension done, so if you want to bring him up now, do it.

Yo, chill. Is this not a discussion forum where people can voice their opinions and every little comment gets torn to shreds?

There you go.  Yes, this is correct.

Assuming (I know) that Westburg is now the primary 3B, Holliday the primary 2B, and Mateo probably the #1 backup at 2B, Ramon Urias must be asking himself “What’s left for me”?

I know Gunnar had to ruin it by hitting a homer as his first hit but wonder if Jackson keeps up the trend and his first Ml hit is a triple?

I’ll go with a double off the Green Monster.   Close play at 2B!

The Kemp deal was always to DFA in mind and pocket a guy in AAA in case of injury on the big league club. No one is going to touch that million I don't think and we will be nestled at Norfolk, waiting in the wings.

^^^This. I think they gave him extra money to make sure he wasn't claimed on waivers. They probably like something about his game and think they can squeeze some value out of it. Worst case is he gets waived and never added to a ML roster. Mid case is he gets waived and added to a roster during which time the other team will pick up the minimum salary with the O's on the hook for the remainder.

BTW, Holliday's nickname should be whatever his buddies called him in high school, assuming it's PG.

Even if they do the unthinkable and pinch hit for Holliday against a tough bullpen lefty late in the game, that would probably still be Mateo over Urias. So, you're right. He's not separating himself from Westburg at all. You have an obvious upgrade in Mayo ready to go.

Maybe late game defensive replacement at 3B is about it?

I think Ramon is probably asking himself how he breaks out of his slump first. Elias needs to start looking for a place to off load these veteran guys who are, or expected to be, outperformed by more talented young guys.

Ramon seems like a good guy.   Personally, with the versatility and speed we now have on the infield, I'd rather keep Urias as the backup infielder than Mateo.

To me, the only thing Mateo offers is speed.

Coby Mayo is breathing down his neck.

Until I see evidence to the contrary, I’m taking DR at his word. He has essentially said he will defer baseball decisions to his baseball experts, talking up his GM among the best if not the best GM in the game. However, I do see Elias presenting DR with all of the financial implications surrounding the call up of Holliday — and then the new boss telling him to go for it now.

    • Hays' advanced metrics (see below) for the season are mediocre at best, and he's mostly only started against LHP for the past couple months since he came back from the IL. Hays' speed has also cratered over the past couple years, so he's not a great defensive outfielder anymore because he can't cover ground like he did in 2022 and 2023. His sprint speed has declined precipitously. It's most likely due to an injury, but the team shouldn't put an injured player in a position to possibly hurt himself further and potentially hurt the team if he's adversely affected physically.  There's no reason to roster a replacement level player like this, especially when the team is negligently benching/platooning a big power bat in Kjerstad, sitting Cowser too much as well, and has Norby in AAA who can also play the OF. The O's have multiple young players that need more playing time and can have a big impact on the lineup. Hays can be optioned to Norfolk or traded for cash considerations or a low level prospect if he's not enough of a team player to accept a minors assignment. Kjerstad needs to play every day, and if he comes anywhere close to reaching the kind of production he showed in the upper levels of the minors, not only is he a superior hitter to Hays regardless of splits, but he elevates the Orioles lineup and makes it less susceptible to slumps like we saw in the 2-3 weeks prior to the All Star Break. Moving on from Hays (and making Mullins the 4th OF) and stopping this team's overreliance on platooning with average-at-best players (which doesn't include O'Hearn) is the best way to make that happen.
    • Nor Holliday, nor Basallo, nor Mayo, nor Kjerstad should be traded (nor Cowser, given that we don't have anything other than him that looks like a likely CF of the future). They are all potential impact players with years of cost-effective control ahead of them, you just don't trade that. Obviously I would love Skubal if we can make a deal for him trading a number of prospects and assets that don't include those names, but if we can't I much prefer trading for a lesser option. The difference between that lesser option and Skubal is not big enough to make up for the loss of all of those years of any of those players mentioned.
    • Glad to have you correct my grammar and spelling now and in the future.  But I must warn you its a full time job.
    • I know some people were asking earlier in game about pinch hitting and why Hyde didn’t. With no Urias adds up even more.
    • Maybe Hyde has Lenn Sakata on speed dial.
    • Interesting. I guess Mountcastle or Santander to 2B. Would have been fun to see it.
    • All y'all Orioles fans need to learn how to spell the new majority owner's name.  It's Rubenstein.  Only one "b" and only one "i" kinda toward the end.
