Anthony Santander 2024

SLAMtander walks it off with HR #42 and, boy, did we ever need that.

I'm really gonna miss him when he walks this winter, but he has definitely earned his big money free agent deal and I hope he gets every last penny he can from whoever wins the impending bidding war for his services.

I was sort taking that as a fait accompli. Signing expensive long-term free agent deals for one dimensional sluggers heading into their 30s definitely does not seem like Elias's style, especially when an extra high draft pick (and accompanying extra bonus pool money) is the reward for not doing so.

It's an easy "no" on his end at this point.

He should easily be able to get 3 years at roughly the same value as the QO, maybe even 4.

Great situation for both him and the team.

Right! Holiday will match or beat his production next year-- so will Kjerstad.

It's also pretty unlikely that Santander will be able to match his 2024 production next year.

132 OPS+ in 2024, 109 for the rest of his career.

In the sense that he can take the best offer out there with a clear conscience and we can recoup a pick without having to worry about him accepting?

I agree it's unlikely but not completely far fetched. I don't think he is a lock to get more than $20M in AAV, so he could decide to take it and then hit FA if he has a good or even better year. His talent level is in a similar range as the players who have accepted: Joc Pederson, Jose Abreu, Wieters etc.

Is it just me or did they sound the HR / walk-off siren before the ball actually went out?

Maybe they were going by Tony's reaction, not realizing that with the winning run on third there wasn't any point in running.

Why shouldn't they not sign him? Still one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. Orioles fans. Geez .

Because contracts extending into the 30's of players with similar profiles tend toward suboptimal results.
