Helsley is the only guy of those three that I would want.

Ya he seems head and shoulders better than the other choices, but the question is what would the Cards want in exchange? The best I'd be willing to offer is Norby or Stowers plus maybe somebody further down our 10-20 prospect list. Would that get it done? Or maybe they'd go for players on our ML roster. St. Louise is getting nothing offensively from their CF position (.154 / .209 / .187 / .396 OPS)  or 2B (.181 / .265 / .326 / .592 OPS) so perhaps Hays + Urias + plus a lottery ticket.

Also, Helsey (at least so far) has extreme reverse splits, with RH hitting .303 off him while LH are only at .121. Maybe that's just SSS, but I'm wondering if he has some kind of killer change up or some such pitch that makes lefties helpless against him. Anybody know?

The Rangers gave up Cole Raegans for Adrolis Chapman and you think the Cardinals are gonna take a package of Hays, Urias and some low level international type guy for a better pitchers.  Halsey is gonna cost a package around Kjerstadt or Povich type to get him if Cards move him.

Really wish the FO would have been more proactive on the reliever front during the offseason going after Adam Ottavino who was a free agent forever and signed for less than what he turned down on his option. David Robertson would have been a very good choice as well..

Maybe they put too much faith in Tate coming back strong and Cionel reverting back to 2022 version but it was easy to foreshadow parts of the pen struggling.

Now it’s gonna cost more in terms of what you have to give up; sigh.

The Cardinals wouldn’t want that package but how highly regarded was Cole Ragans when the Royals got him?

Outside the Rangers top 10.

Right. It’s revisionist history to act like Cole Ragans was some hot commodity just because he turned out so good.

I like the submariner from the Giants Tyler Rogers. Team controlled through next season. Maybe the Giants want to trade some bullpen for offense?  You can’t protect a lead that you don’t have.

I like the idea of being able to throw that arm angle at RHH. Plus, our IF defense is elite.

O’day 2.0.

They made a horrible decision on Kimbrel. He struggled a bunch in Phillie last year. He’s looked no different here and mostly appears a high wire act. A big waste of $12 million while still under John Angelos.

Ragans wasn’t that highly thought of when they traded him.  https://blogs.fangraphs.com/rangers-boost-bullpen-with-aroldis-chapman-trade/

He also hasn’t been nearly as good as he was for the short stretch in 2023. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/cole-ragans-666142?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb

Cole Ragans is a TJ x 2 guy May 2019 and March 2018, which I believe for some Clubs would play bigger than others how to assess him.

Robert Stephenson was June 2nd last year...here's how MLB trade rumors beheld him:

Here in 2023, he began the season on the injured list due to elbow inflammation but was able to return in the middle of April.  He’s since made 18 appearances but has a 5.14 ERA in those. He’s still getting punchouts at a similar rate but his control seems to have fallen off this year. He struck out 26.8% of opponents from 2019 to 2022 and walked 7.9% but those figures are 27.9% and 13.1% this year.

That’s a small sample size but Stephenson has shown himself to be fairly inconsistent in his career, with notable swings in his effectiveness. Nonetheless, the Rays will take a shot on helping him harness his stuff. Given their track record of helping flawed pitchers get the best of their arsenals, it wouldn’t be a total shock to see Stephenson get back on track in Tampa.
