Aside from his first start, Bundy has done better than maybe most of us expected he would. He has flirted with no-hitters that he really had no chance of completing, but still a good sign. The only question now is how long can he continue this streak?

Cain has been on the DL twice this year with hamstring problems and has lost quite a bit of arm strength as a result. He has not pitched six innings since May 21, but he is coming off back to back five inning starts against the Nationals where he did not allow a run. He did walk seven on top of five hits, though. He may be starting to get back on track, but really, he has struggled all season even before the injury.

Well, Triggs was good for three innings, but he stopped using his slider in the fourth inning for whatever reason and got fastball happy which led to three runs for the Orioles. Then, Coulombe comes in and gives the Orioles their first look at a bad pitcher in the series. He had no control over his stuff and when he threw strikes, they were right in the middle of the plate which is the only way the Orioles can hit like they did in June and they did. The A's pretty much had nothing to throw out there against us here except pure relief pitchers and even Triggs wasn't expected to go more than four innings. So, while it's nice to see the Orioles avoid the sweep and Tillman to get his 15th win, the quality of pitching in this game was far inferior to the quality of pitching in the first three games that shut the Orioles offense down. They basically got the A's version of James Shields. The A's do get credit for fighting back to score four runs off the Orioles bullpen and force Zach Britton into the game in the ninth inning and the A's were a double away from tying the game. All those runs and the Orioles still barely squeak out the win.

So, Cain, Bumgarner and Cueto are real starters and Bumgarner is perhaps the best in baseball and definitely the best the Orioles have faced this season. Bumgarner and Cueto are having outstanding years while Cain has dealt with hamstring injuries.

It really depends if Cain can continue pitching the way he has over the last two starts and if Bundy can continue his streak as well. Cain has missed a lot of time due to hamstring problems and his arm strength and endurance have suffered, but looks like he may be getting things back together a bit now. Bundy, of course, has been very good since his bad first start allowing only five earned in 23.2 innings and will be facing the Giants for the first time.

Boston lost to the Yankees to fall to three back as the Yankees are now only 3.5 games back in the WC while the Orioles remain a half game back. Toronto will begin a series against Houston who have won three in a row and crushed the Twins in both games of their doubleheader putting up double digit run totals in both games. It looks like the AStros might be ready to get serious and are two back of the WC. Seattle is one back and the Tigers are half a game back of the struggling Red Sox. The WC race might be about ready to heat up. I guess Toronto will find out tomorrow whether Houston is getting hot again or not. Meanwhile, the Giants have been just barely holding off the Dodgers in the West, but remain a game ahead.

We can play that game another way, too. The Giants have a team OBP of .331, which is greater than all but three Orioles, one of whom (Hyun Soo Kim) only has 220 plate appearances. The Giants have six regular players with an OBP of .331 or greater, including Belt who is sitting at .397.

When it comes to starting pitching, the Giants have two really great starters and then some question marks. The bad news for the Orioles is that those two great starters, Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto, are pitching in this series. Or maybe that’s good news given how they tend to roll over for scrub pitchers. Either way, more on that below in the game breakdowns.
