Talks stall on trade for Roberts-Suntimes

One thing that is odd to me over this little Cubs-Os "PA killed the deal" spat is that it reached this finger pointing stage. If AM and Hendry are two professionals, I'm surprised one would let the potential deal/rumor hit the press to let the other's organization look bad.

Regardless, this constant blaming of PA by other cities' media appears to be both good sport and quite comical at the same time.

The next few weeks should be interesting as some of these pretenders/contenders get serious about the potential of their Opening Day roster and whether they could use the upgrade to EB or BRob. I'm impressed with AM's patience and I hope it pays off.

Well, the link says that both sides deny this is the case. And the article in question is reliant on a single source. Which is ridiculous.

This speculation is very wrong.

If you were getting Hill and Pie, you wouldn't be getting back five additional players... at least not the ones like Marmol, Gallagher, Veal, etc... you'd be getting guys in the lower minors like Huseby, Burke or Castillo. And the whole Vitters thing is a creation of OH, and not grounded in reality in the least.

You are probably right, which is just another reason why Bedard and Roberts are still Orioles and have a good chance of remaining with the O's.

Teams like the Cubs and Mariners want impact players that can help them win now, but they are not willing to give up the young players that it will take to get them. Instead they would rather just negotiate with McPhail and see if they can talk him into a mistake. So that that has not worked.

Either the Mets, Boston or NYY are going to end up with Santana. They will not only give up some of their best prospects, they will give up many of their best prospects. Why? Because they want to win now and Santana can help them do it. Bedard and Roberts will not result the same $ contract as Santana but the approach in requiring young players is similar. Not the same, similar.

When and if teams decide that that want to win now and are willing to pay the appropriate price, then McPhail may deal his impact players. Until then, its all talk.

I always thought we were going to get Wieters signed. I wasn't happy with the way things were going and I was doubting it but I thought it would get done.

Perhaps you could explain to me how one can have doubt and certainty at the same time. Sounds like you're talking out of both sides of your mouth.

You were also told - that night - that we weren't making any progress in negotiations and that it looked like Wieters (it's Wieters, btw, not Weiters) was going to slip through the cracks, if I remember correctly (and apologies if I do not.) How did the other info you received re: Wieters play out? I don't want you to think that I'm disparaging your value to the board - I'm not. I really appreciate any word from inside sources. And I understand why you have the utmost faith in them. I just think a healthy dose of skepticism is wise [for me, and others who have to digest this information].

Finally, I don't think people here (for the most part) are "slobbering" over AM - that you think so could be read as another sign of your bias with regard to AM. Maybe you've just noticed the AM fanboys, and not the more objective posters. Regardless...

...the fact is most here are only preaching patience - as in not condemning him before the clock expires on making the necessary trades.

And Bisciotti is thrown out frequently on here as the kind of owner the O's need. He's idealized far more than AM is.

I agree. Not to take anything away from the info that Bigbird provides, but it seems that while we're told to take what he says with a grain of salt that he takes everything he's told as the gospel.

Once it was past midnight and when we heard from EVERYONE, including those in the organization, that it wasn't getting done, I did have my doubts...In fact, for what I read, everyone on the board was doubting it around 12:10.

Any guesses on who the seven from the cubs were?

In my post a few days ago I had the O's with the following:

Hill

Pie

Gallagher

Marshall

Cedeno

Patterson

Murton

Cubs Get:

Bedard

Roberts

Payton

Essentially I took the rumored deal for Roberts (Gallagher, Marshall, Cedeno)

added Pie, Hill (mentioned many times today since the idea of Bedard broke) Patterson and Murton with the addition of Bedard and Payton.

Also Veal has been mentioned today.

The question though is who do you think was the seven players in the rumored deal coming back from the Cubs?

I don't think it was ever actually on the table. Just another of the many rumored combinations/deals that have been bandied about both here and in Chicago. Take everything with a very large grain of salt. Given how tight lipped the FO has been and the numerous rumors that have not come true I would suggest waiting until the press conference. Wish I had a better idea for you but that is where we seem to be at right now.

    • While it’s not as head turning as last April, I like what Mateo has brought to the team in the early going.  Playing mostly against LHP, he’s hitting .250/.314/.406, and has stolen 6 bases.  His stolen base and big lead off second base afterwards in the 7th was a big distraction to JP Sears during his pitch sequence to Gunnar Henderson, and Sears eventually threw Gunnar a cookie that he clobbered for a 2-run homer.  Palmer commented something like “don’t tell me that speed doesn’t bother a pitcher.”    Overall I feel Mateo is having better strike zone judgment than usual so far.  We know that could change at any minute, but it’s been nice for now.
    • Agree.  That would be ideal.  Especially the leg kick.  I looked for video from last night and couldn't find anything.
    • My hope is it takes a little longer to get going because they are having him make adjustments.
    • Well, I know.  And I really like Cionel, and root hard for him. He did a nice job of turning his season around last year, and I hope he can pull a rabbit out of his hat again.  But I’m not real confident.
    • Really pleasantly surprised that he seemingly has healed up so quickly after the platelet injection.   I had the same injury plus a chip the size of a quarter in my elbow at the tear spot and didn't get surgery either.  This was around 2 years ago.   I was bowling and my elbow just completely blew out during one of my shots.   Turned black and blue and the entire elbow swelled up.   Went to the specialist and got the MRI and xrays and it was a mess.   Of course they recommended surgery but seeing as how I was bowling in multiple tournies and leagues at the time, and lifting weights, I decided against it as surgery would have laid me up for many months.   So I rested it, kept lightly working out, and within 45 days or so the swelling and discoloration went away and I started bowling again and have bowled 10-15 games a week since with little issue.   I just feel twinges now and then.  Working out 4 days a week as well.  So it is possible to come back from this without surgery.   Of course I am not trying to throw a baseball 90 mph every 5 days either.   That is really the only time it hurts, when I throw overhand.  Of course he doesn't have a bone chip in his elbow either.  Just the small tear.   If he can get through the first few games without a problem I think he will last the year.   We shall see.
