He has to be healthy to produce. He was cleared for baseball activities, but it will take some time before the nerves in his hands and arms are 100%. I suspect they learned that when he reported to the mini-camp, and that's why they signed Delmon Young right away.

Keep him on the DL until his hands and arms are as good as they're going to be, then send him on a rehab assignment.

Nolan caught a bad break last year when he was cleared to play, even though his surgery was not successful. Perhaps the O's gave him the contract this year as a do-over after screwing up last year. Regardless, if they are serious about giving him an opportunity, they should optimize that opportunity by letting him be as healthy as he can be before asking him to produce.

If he can get healthy and produce on a rehab assignment, I won't be sorry to see him replace Delmon Young.

Again, just speaking as a physician, I think sometimes we misunderstand how serious and very different the neurosurgical issues are with Nolan Reimold. Having to redo a spinal fusion procedure is EXTRAORDINARILY risky and involves the very real likelihood that the high functioning neuromuscular activities necessary to hit a baseball at a major league level will never return to what they were. This procedure was done for the rest of Nolan's after baseball life, but whether he can produce at this level remains to be seen. But his condition and procedures are not your run of the mill, typical baseball type orthopedic procedures. I think the likelihood of him returning to the production of the Nolan Reimold we saw in the past would be a miracle. Not impossible, but a miracle.

How did Connolly get wind of it? His sources are in the warehouse aren't they?

Why would Colvin's agent want to leak to potential signing. Aren't they setting themselves up for another Balfour situation. If it is known that he failed a physical, then it will be that much harder to get a contract for him and then his agent get X% of nothing.

Did you ever think that the Orioles may be delaying the announcement like the Yankees did on Thornton? They may not want to just DFA someone. They may be looking to preserve assets.

At the risk of going out on a very long limb, I would hazard that 1 in 10 return completely to their previous level of strength, coordination, flexibility.
