You could absolutely argue that Rodney is a better fit than Balfour or Johnson.

In the case of Johnson, it's as simple as Rodney should not cost as much as the $10MM JJ got. It should be much closer to the $12MM that Balfour received.

With Balfour, both pitchers have big K numbers. Both have had BB problems (4.4/9 career for Rodney and 3.9/9 career for Balfour). The big difference? Balfour is a FB pitcher (career 35% GB rate) and Rodney is a GB pitcher (career 50% GB rate) which profiles better at OPACY.

A lot of the Rodney hate stems from the arrow-shooting and the fact that he had a couple truly awful years in the middle of his career.

Meant to say $6MM per year for Balfour in the above post.

He had a truly awful year last season as well. He can be great and he can be terrible. But what I like about signing him is that it would leave Tommy Hunter where he excelled. Had Hunter moved to closer, I was afraid it would weaken two spots.

Wha? 5 mill puts us at about 88. That leaves 12.

Actually "close to $100 million" is not $100 million. Those words were chosen VERY carefully you can believe that. "Close to" is probably $95 million or so.

So if Rodney puts us at $88 million or thereabouts, setting aside money for midseason dumpster diving as usual will leave us with not much room to do anything else. Surely it won't be enough for a starting pitcher of any worth.

The hate, from me at least, comes from the fact that those truly awful years you referenced strongly suggests that's who Rodney actually is, not the one year superstar that he looked like in 2012. The arrow shooting, and perceived pompousness has little to do with that.

Close to 100 million could also mean 105 million.

Your only argument ever, semantics. See ya.
