Hunter Harvey, stud

Really interesting read, thanks for sharing.

Seems like the first scouting report was meant to be the conservative side of the conversation, and if the worst thing Harvey projects as is a no. 3 starter who can flash no. 2 ability, then sign me up.

For the record, I tend to think his fastball will sit at the 70 level when it is all said and done. Depends on the velocity of course, but for all the praise about his frame adding weight, one would think something has to uptick a bit.

But velocity tends to peak on the early side and start a downward path soon after. So any gains made may be short-lived.

And velocity gains in teen arms are often times just enough to keep pace with the decrease in velocity you see when the arm is stretched out over 5-6 innings and throwing on shorter rest.

Short but effective outing for Harvey today: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's. He threw 50 of 85 pitches for strikes. That's a pretty high pitch count in 4 innings but sometimes it's like that when you're racking up a lot of strikeouts.

He struck the first four batters out effortlessly. Later, he appeared to have a blister problem (several - if not many - pitchers here have blisters at this point. He hit two batters in a row and had trouble getting pitches to break in after the blister was evident. His two-seemer was 92 - 94.

Another great outing tonight: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA to 1.68.

He is showing the capability for a bump in level. Probably soon that he will go to Frederick even though he will be 3 and 1/2 years younger than median Carolina League players.

Orioles 2013 first-round pick Hunter Harvey will be the starting pitching for the Northern Division team in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game set for June 17 in Hickory, N.C.

Harvey heads a list of five Shorebirds named to the game this morning, and not only does he get to start this game, but he'll be pitching just 18 miles from his home in Catawba, N.C.

That is quite an honor. FWIW, Harvey is 3rd in ERA, 2nd in WHIP and 2nd in strikeouts in the Sally League, so the honor is well deserved. All the guys ahead of him in any of those categories are at least 22 years old.
