The Orioles! That would be fitting, in that the 2016 campaign will mark the 25th anniversary season of Camden Yards, the Orioles' gem of a ballpark. So there's the hook, if you will. The O's and Camden previously hosted the All-Star Game back in 1993.

I was away in college at this time.

Can someone explain to me what happened. What is the "Cito sucks" phrase I see all the time. Did he not start an Orioles player?

He didn't put Mussina in the game. Mike took it upon himself to warm up in the 9th and the fans got a chant going. I still remember seeing Cito smirking in the dugout.

Cito later said he was saving Mussina in case the game went extra innings.

Gaston was the manager for two American League All-Star teams since he was the manager of the championship American League franchise in 1992 and 1993. He was criticized for selecting six Blue Jays to the 1993 roster, but was unapologetic, stating all six were World Champions and two were future Hall of Famers.

In the 1993 All-Star Game held at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, he was criticized for not getting Orioles pitcher Mike Mussina into the game. Mussina got up in the ninth inning to warm up in the bullpen.[10] Mussina later claimed that he was simply doing a between-start workout, but some interpreted it was an attempt to force Gaston to put him into the game. As angry fans jeered in dismay, incredulous that Gaston would not use the popular local player and believing Mussina had been sent to warm up for no reason, Gaston instead allowed Blue Jays pitcher Duane Ward to close out the victory for the American League. Baltimore fans did not like this perceived snub, and T-shirts were sold outside of Camden Yards that season bearing the phrase, "Will Rogers never met Cito Gaston," referencing the famous line by Will Rogers, "I never met a man yet that I didn't like."

He was voted onto the ['93] All-Star team, however he did not pitch in the game. There was a controversial incident toward the end of the game when Mussina chose to warm up in the bullpen, despite the fact AL manager Cito Gaston had told him that he would not enter the game.[6] Orioles fans believed Mussina was warming up in preparation to come in and pitch the ninth inning, and when Gaston put Duane Ward in to pitch the ninth inning, the fans at Camden Yards spent the rest of the game chanting "We Want Mike" and booing Gaston very loudly, as the popular slogan "Cito Sucks" was born in Baltimore. The slogan could be seen on t-shirts or heard even years later in Baltimore any time the visiting Blue Jays came to town. Gaston was never treated well by Baltimore fans for the rest of his managerial career and he was subject to death threats for not pitching Mussina in the game.[7] Many believe Mussina threw on his own as a way of publicly showing up Gaston because he was angry at not pitching in the game. However, Mussina said he was just getting his work in, as he was scheduled to throw that day, and it was apparent Gaston did require his services.[6] Mussina returned from the DL in August against the Texas Rangers, only to have the Orioles shut him down three weeks later in mid-September due to lower back pain.

      In theory the team could go 4 series in a row where they win one out of three games. On the flipside a team could win eight out of twelve games, but have a three game sweep mixed in this stretch. Which team is actually doing better the one that hasn’t been swept or the other playing .666 winning percentage ball.  The streak is a good indicator, but I’ll take a deep playoff run with a few three game losing streaks mixed in over the course of a season.

      Exceeding expectations: Irvin.  I said before the season I thought he'd have a monster season but had no idea it'd be like this. Gunnar:  Thought he'd be more of the same as last year, maybe a bit of a sophomore slump but he's MVP level even with his recent skid.  His defense looks legit, too.  He's making the leap in year 2 to superstar player. Adley:  Hitting for a higher average than I would have expected, now it looks like the power is coming around, too. Cowser:  Low bar to hurdle here, didn't know what to expect/low expectations help him here.   O'Hearn:  Thought he'd still be good but not this good. Mounty:  Glad to have been wrong about him after being all over him last year.  His defense is excellent, I think he'll be in the running for a GG this year. Westburg:  1.8 bWAR already, had no idea this was coming.  Looking like an invaluable member of the team moving forward.  Steady, quiet excellence. Mateo:  Thought he might not even have a spot on the team this spring but his defense is electric at 2nd base.  Would like to see more steals from him, though. Kremer:  He's been great. I don't know how his bWAR is -0.2, 46 innings of a 1.022 WHIP has to be worth more than that.  I thought he'd be solid, I didn't think he'd be this good. Suarez:  Out of nowhere for 23 innings of 0.913 WHIP.  Amazing. Akin:  I'll get some flak for this but I don't care.  I didn't expect much from him, so anything positive is a step in the right direction.  1.056 WHIP out of the pen, I'll take that all day.  21 strikeouts in 18 innings.  Remains to be seen if he can do this all year, but I think he's fully healthy and back to throwing strikes.   Failing to meet expectations Jackson Holliday:  But I'm not upset about it.   Kimbrel:  But of course. Cedric:  This hurts because I love the guy but he looks awful at the plate.  He's still somewhat indispensable because of his range in CF but the second half of last year was bad and it's even worse this year.   Tony Santander:  Almost don't want to put him here because he's a notorious slow starter so expectations probably should have been adjusted.   Cano:  Low on the list here because I expected him to be not as effective this year as he was last year.  But he's a good candidate for a roller coaster appearance and he's bailed himself out with some outstanding defensive plays.  1.328 WHIP isn't ideal for someone in his spot. I'm not gonna put injured players on here so that spares Hays and G-Rod from making the failing to meet expectations list.

      Watching the weather tonight it seems like they might have been able to get at least half the game in before this current precipitation which doesn't look all that heavy. Plus it looks like there's going to be a break in the weather during the next hour.

      Both teams have an off day Thursday. Don’t know why the game wasn’t rescheduled for then.
