vs. RED SOX, 4/18

OFFNY

Recommended Posts

Machado did exactly what the Red Sox wanted him to do, roll over to first. Buchholz pitched the entire at-bat to get that result and he did. Just a lack of offensive awareness by Machado. Hopefully for the Orioles this is just inexperience.

Well, Buchholz didn't really get him to "roll over" it - that phrase usually refers to when a player is out in front of an off-speed pitch and pulls a weak ground ball. He took the pitch the other way, just didn't square up on it.

Nice catch by Pearce!

And there are times when he takes the first two pitches, the ump makes a bad call on the 1-0 pitch, he patiently runs the count full, and nobody has any memory of how the at-bat actually went down.

I think I gotta leave this game thread.

Nah. Stick around. We win this game. It'll be fun!

Buchholz did exactly what you are supposed to when you get a call off the plate, try to throw one in the same spot or further out and hope you get the call or the hitter (understandably) expands the zone.

That doesn't mean Machado HAD to expand the zone. That's the point. That entire at bat was reactionary. He did exactly what Buchholz wanted him to do. When you do that, you didn't have a good at bat as a hitter.
