Norfolk Tides

Norfolk pounded out 21 hits - including three home runs - in a 20-4 romp over the Charlotte Knights Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark.

Eight different Tides registered multiple hits in the game, while five different batters registered multiple RBIs. The 20 runs were three runs shy of the franchise record of 23, while Norfolk's 21 hits were just two hits shy of the franchise mark of 23, set on 5/9/14 at Indianapolis.

Audry Perez set a new career high with four runs scored, and he matched his career high with four hits in the contest. He hit a solo home run in the seventh inning and drove in three, upping his season total to nine runs batted in.

Christian Walker had three hits and drove in four, with his three-run homer highlighting a seven-run eighth inning. Walker has now hit .306 with four home runs and 12 RBI in 12 games this season.

Sharlon Schoop doubled, singled and drove in four runs, while Henry Urrutia reached base safely five times via three singles and two walks. L.J. Hoes added three hits and three runs scored, as Norfolk registered 20 runs in the contest after plating just 31 runs through its first 11 games of the 2016 campain.

Michael Almanzar added a solo home run in the win, while Paul Janish and Dariel Alvarez each contributed two hits and an RBI.

Nick Additon (1-1) was the benificiary of the offensive output, although the southpaw didn't need much help after turning in a solid effort. Additon yielded two runs on five hits while setting a Tides season-high with 7.0 innings pitched. He walked two and struck out a pair as Norfolk earned its second straight win.

Hot Bats Carry Baysox on Cool Night

Baysox Score All Six Runs With Two Outs in 6-2 Win

On a cool night in Erie, the Baysox bats remained hot providing numerous clutch hits in a 6-2 victory. The win was a fourth consecutive for the Baysox.

Down 2-0 in the fourth inning, Chris O?Brien singled home two runs to tie the game on a solid chopper through the right side of the infield. That would be the beginning of a big night for the Baysox with two men down.

In the seventh inning with two outs and nobody aboard, Mike Yastrzemski ripped a double to right-centerfield. Corban Joseph then singled sharply up the middle to plate Yastrzemski with the lead run and Bowie was on top 3-2.

The Baysox added three more runs in the eighth inning ? once again with two outs. Drew Dosch singled to score Julio Borbon and as the ball was bobbled in right field Sisco got third base. He would score on an errant pickoff play. Following a wild pitch that moved Dosch to third base, Glynn Davis added another run with a single to center and it was a 6-2 Baysox lead.

Bowie got a strong start from Jayson Aquino who picked up his first win in the Orioles organization. Aquino kept his pitch count down and worked 6 and 1/3rd inning to get the win. Ashur Tolliver entered with one on and one down in the seventh inning working with a one run lead. Tolliver enticed a big double play ball to end the threat. He worked 2 and 2/3rd scoreless innings for his first save of the year.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks scored five times in the first inning, while the Frederick Keys left 12 on base in a 6-1 loss on Tuesday night at Nymeo Field. The setback forces the team?s second rubber game of the year on Wednesday morning. In spite of the outcome, MLB rehabber Brian Matusz impressed, throwing four shutout innings and striking out nine.

Entering the game with the third-best ERA in the Carolina League, Matthew Grimes struggled over three innings. Corey Toups opened the game with a leadoff double and advanced to third on a sac-bunt. From there, Ryan O?Hearn walked to put men on the corners. One batter later, Grimes (1-1) delivered a wild pitch causing O?Hearn to break for second, but the throw could not be handled by second baseman Steve Wilkerson, enabling Toups to score. O?Hearn later advanced on a flyout, before Brandon Downes hit a two-run homer.

Ahead 3-0, the Blue Rocks got a single and an RBI double by Wander Franco to make it a four-run affair, while Franco got to third on a throwing error by Erick Salcedo. Chad Johnson then singled to complete the scoring. In the third, Franco hit a opposite field homer to complete the Blue Rocks scoring. Ending 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Franco came up a triple short of the cycle.

Grimes took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits in three innings. He walked three and gave up two home runs.

Pedro Fernandez pitched into the sixth inning, surrendering one run on four hits in five-plus stanzas. He walked three and struck out seventh to earn his second victory of the year.

In the sixth though, Fernandez (1-0) got into some trouble, loading the bases after singles by Jay Gonzalez and Josh Hart and a walk to Wilkerson to start the frame. Evan Beal came on in relief and quickly got a 5-3 double play, however a free pass to Jomar Reyes kept the inning alive for Tad Gold. Going to a 2-2 count, Gold hit a ball to the warning track, but Alfredo Escalera ran it down.

Frederick threatened once more in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs. Entering from the bullpen, Derek Gordon struck out Aderlin Rodriguez to end the game.

Matusz gave up only one hit in his four innings of work. Entering in the sixth, he threw 48 pitches, 38 for strikes. It was his second rehab appearance with the Keys.

Brian Gonzalez, Garrett Cleavinger and Christian Turnipseed steadied the way for the Shorebirds, limiting Greensboro to one run on five hits in a 3-1 win Tuesday night to even the series. Gonzalez earned his first win of the season, while Cleavinger earned his first hold and Turnipseed collected his fourth save.

Delmarva built a 3-0 lead on an Alex Murphy RBI single in the first inning, a Yermin Mercedes RBI double in the third inning, and a passed ball with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

The only trouble Gonzalez got into in five frames came in the fifth, when the Grasshoppers put runners at the corners with nobody out. But Gonzalez allowed only one run to score when Anfernee Seymour bounced out to third base.

Once Gonzalez left the game, Cleavinger and Turnipseed shut down all hope for Greensboro. The two pitched to just one batter over the minimum in four combined innings, striking out six along the way.

Matusz' 4 near perfect innings - even though it was just in Frederick - was an eye-opener, imo. 4 innings, 1 hit, no walks 9 SO's. Did I mention he pitched 4 innings? Could he be a left-handed starter for Baltimore this year?

When I saw that line I had the thought that I would like to see him get some starts at Triple A. All depends on where that fastball is though. If he's consistent 91-93 through those innings I would try him as a starter. If he's at 88-91 then it's not with the experiment because he would likely get creamed.

Urrutia is dominating AAA finally. Jay Gonzalez is looking like he adjusted to A+, even if he is a little old for the league. Mancini, Reyes and Cisco are all off to good/great starts. I'm kind of skeptical of scouting any of the pitching off of boxscores, until one of our OH scouts tells me to follow someone.
