To me, a test run is all this is, until proven otherwise.

I said this in another thread, but of course it's a test run. If he performs well, looks strong, and shows no ill effects, then they'll keep pushing harder little by little.

It's possible that he continues to start and stretches out to 5 innings by September, at which point he would be available as a playoff option. But that's putting the cart well before the horse. Sunday won't be much different from how they've used him the last 6 weeks other than which innings he is pitching.

If he gets stretched out thru September he won't be a playoff option. He'll be shut down by 100 innings.

I agree that I'm not sure he's a playoff option. But he doesn't need to be one. He just needs to help get the O's into the playoffs.

I think that Bundy will be on a strict pitch count. If he's got 65 or so innings left this season, at 15 pitches an inning he's got about 1000 pitches he can throw and remain on schedule for the year.

If you take opportunities to skip him in the rotation when possible, he probably gets 12 - 13 starts down the stretch. 1000 / 13 = 75 pitches per game.

So the O's can limit him to 75 pitches per game and have him start every 5th or 6th day the rest of the season without putting him at significantly more risk.

I like this strategy better than using him out of the bullpen. It gets his regular work (which should be easier on his arm than the alternative), and it means we can automatically have him pitching in valuable situations (starting a game) instead of having him sit in the pen waiting for the right opportunity to use him.

In games where he keeps the O's close through 4 or 5 innings, Buck can aggressively use the pen to take advantage and maximize the chance of getting a win.

He is going to have to pitch more than 75 pitches a game if he is going to start the regularly. He could reach that in the middle of the fourth. That doesn't work. I would expect him to stretch out as he goes along.

I think, his first start, will be limited to 75, but that doesn't meant the rest will. :)
