I am furious over Wieters right now. He sits for 6 games, after he comes back struggles on defense and right away we hear about his foot still bothering him. Ok well then why on the world wasn't he put on the DL? I guess giving him another 8-9 days to get healthy just makes too much sense. Instead lets have him aggravate it instead. Brilliant.

Yeah. Pena could fill in. At least he'll block balls.

It's the Bud Norris phenomenon. Nobody wants to go on the DL in their walk year. Especially after taking a QO.

The more I think about it the more it ticks me off. I mean was basically one more week off going to kill Matt or the team?

Instead we will be hearing about how his foot is still hurting him for lord knows how long. The club had no reason to push Matt, none.

Because in Buck's mind, an injured Wieters is still better than every other catcher in the organization, and he's better than every other catcher in the AL.

Then Buck is a fool. We are talking about 8 games. 8! Off day Monday.

In tonight's presser, Buck immediately gets short/defensive when Gary makes any comment about Wieters not being 100%. I love Buck, but if he had to answer to NY, Chi, Bos press corps he would be taken to task for some of his stubborness that is disguised as loyalty.

Watching Russel Martin steal strikes with his pitch framing and then watching Matt not even able to catch was a glaring contrast.

Looks like he won't even get the QO this year

Bingo w/ the framing comment. The only team dumb enough to give, & pay, Wieters a QO is the Orioles. He can no longer field anything low or outside. He backhands everything ... & his backhand is atrocious.

Give Joseph a chance to play regularly & he will hit better. He's the type of player that needs his 'reps' to get in his groove. CJ & Pena will only get better by next year ... Wieters (unfortunately; I like the guy) is diminishing returns.

Joseph will be 31 years old next year. Do 31 year old players who have never hit before typically start hitting? Joseph couldn't even hit at Triple A. I think if he doesn't start hitting this year I would plan on a new back-up catcher for 2017. Pena only has an OPS around .600 at Norfolk. These guys are not starters.

This thread should be titled "Grasping at Straws"

    • Career ERA 4.45. Career FIP 4.46.
    • I don't understand that either?   Baumann has a 3.44 ERA and won 10 games last year, he definitely will not clear waivers. He could go to the Yankees!
    • First thing that comes to mind is Just about everybody successful college basketball team.  Duke, Kentucky, UConn, etc.  turnover every year, win every year, massive attendance and merch sales.
    • He can’t help that he looks young and doesn’t have facial hair. And yes he was extremely ineffective in his 30+ ABs. But as we have all seen, the jump from AAA to MLB is the most difficult than it has ever been in 2024. Look at how the #2 prospect is doing in MIL … spoiler alert - not good. Holliday is going to have to find a balance between being patient with his swing decisions but not falling behind in the count so regularly. He will also learn to adjust to the velo that you only consistently see in the big leagues.
    • Mullins is going to get the majority of the starts until the All-Star Break to get him to turn it around.  They are a better team with him in CF and he is just hitting in the mid 200’s.  If he continues to struggle then they may have to make some changes.
    • The Orioles have plenty of 8th reliever candidates anyways.  Jonathan Heasley (0.60, 0.73 WHIP) and Dillon Tate (3.60, 0.80 WHIP) are on the 40-man while Kade Strowd (3.00, 0.67 WHIP) may have the best stuff of the three. And that's not even considering the Chayce McDermott could still be an option in the pen this year though I think they'd use the other ones first and keep him starting in AAA.
    • I’m fine with what DR keeps saying — maybe others will eventually believe him — that he is leaving baseball decisions to his baseball people. And his GM doesn’t like to tip his hand about anything, especially contracts. I think these guys like winning and seem to like their team. They will make mistakes, but I do have faith they want the O’s to be as good as they can be with the resources they have. Of course I hope they sign some of our young guys and expand the payroll. I just don’t need promises in an interview.
