B+ for me. They managed to add to the team without giving up anything of great value (Heim might be something but they've got plenty of depth at catcher). They didn't make any amazing moves but didn't make any mistakes either and managed to make the team better.

B+

I would have like to get a better starter, but it would have definitely required giving up multiple top prospects for the O's. I would have liked to get Santiago. The Twins straight up robbed the Angels. I'm not sure what the Angels would have asked from us.

Wiley is an innings eater, and he looks like he might have turned the corner. 7 innings of 1 hit ball is not "lucky". Much better than giving up a boatload of prospects for someone like Moore or Gray.

Steve Pearce is one of my all time favorite O's, and I'm happy to have him back on the team. He makes the OF/bench so much better. I think Reimold's days are numbered.

I give it a B. Hopefully Miley and Pearce do well and contribute, but they are marginal upgrades. I'm more pleased with DD upgrading and not giving up anything of of significant value. I don't see Heim or Miranda as contributors now or in the future so no complaints on what was given up.

Dallas Braden had us as the losers of the AL on tonight's broadcast.

A LOT of people I'm reading have us as close to the biggest losers of the trade deadline because we didn't upgrade the rotation.

Objectively, a B-.

But I love me some Steve Pearce, so a B+ it is!

Seriously though, Miley and Pearce for Heim and Miranda is a darn good haul all things considered. Our farm system is hella weak so any big time moves would have been extremely painful. I'm very pleased that there were no obvious K-Rod/Parra type deals this year.

Plus Miley has a pretty decent chance of contributing meaningfully next year for a fairly reasonable pricetag, so that's something else to like about our deadline, imo. We theoretically addressed an offseason need well ahead of time.

And if we did, many of those same talking heads would likely be bashing DD in the offseason(if we don't go all the way) for further depleting an already barren farm.

Let 'em yap.

Dan Szymborski's take:

Strangely, the Baltimore Orioles' pickup of Wade Miley actually has the potential to be extremely impactful for the simple reason that the back of the team's rotation -- and the middle -- has been absolutely dreadful this season and even a plausible No. 4 starter type like Miley represents a significant upgrade. And Steve Pearce still looks good in Baltimore. The deadline was quiet for the Boston Red Sox but while the Toronto Blue Jays were active, they mostly shuffled pieces around rather than make an impact. Amusingly, the Orioles get the biggest boost of playoff chances by being in a tight race, making the largest improvement of the teams in that race, and having a plausible long-shot (the Yankees) more or less drop out.

He has us winning 89 games and with a 68.9% chance at the playoffs, behind the Blue Jays and slightly ahead of the Red Sox.

The Orioles needed a lefty and in Miley, they got a lefty. One who seemed better suited in the NL; his ERA this year is just under 5. But I guess he can eat some innings because he gets to 6 or more IP more often than not so that should give the pen some rest.

Can I give a cop out answer and go with: Incomplete?

In all seriousness, it's probably somewhere between B- and C+, but I say incomplete because it all depends on where they're willing to go with Bundy.

I think it's now crucial that the Orioles find a way to make sure Bundy is able to go in October should the O's get there. I think Tillman, Gausman, Bundy gives the team a chance with whichever of Miley and Gallardo is throwing the best at the time taking the fourth spot.

With that said, you now have a starting five set with Tillman, Gausman, Bundy, Miley and Gallardo along with some spot start options in Worley, Wilson and Despaigne to keep Bundy fresh.

As for the Pearce move, I like that a lot. We needed a bat to platoon with Alvarez and Pearce is solid against LHP.

I'd still like to see a lefty reliever, but I'll give DD until the end of August for that one.

B- Nothing like the deal Toronto got fleecing the Pirates, or the big ones that the Dodgers & the Rangers pulled off. DD gave up essentially nothing (already have a non-hit catcher on the 25-man team) & got two 'good-fit' players for Buck to maneuver & plug holes.

Disagree on the Toronto-Pittsburgh deal. Liriano is 32 and has looked bad this year. I think Hutchison is a very good pick-up for the Pirates. I think you are overrating Liriano and underrating Hutchison.

Have to like the players we got and the price we paid for them. DD did very well considering what he had to work with, IMO. Hard t see how DD could have done much better. I'd say B+. Had the Ubaldo for Upton deal gone thru, it would be an A. As I understand it, that is on PA, rather than DD, but we are grading the team here, right?
