Would the Pirates want to trade one of their corners instead and slide McCutchen over? I'd like to get Marte and his OBP if they believe he has the arm to play RF.

I think they are thinking what you are thinking. They want to save money and slide Marte to CF.

I would be interested in McCutchen. .886 OPS in September. He came on strong. If he is healthy he is a good bet for .850-.900 OPS and high OBP. Up until this year, four straight seasons of .400+.

I'm not believing people on here are saying they would not want McCutchen on this team. I agree we probably don't have the pieces to pull off a trade for him but if I had the chance I'd do it in a heartbeat. I know he had a down year, but given his career numbers I'd take a chance on a bounce back. I just feel that if you think the championship window is open you might as well try to maximize it while you can.

We wouldn't have enough for him, but I think the Pirates should keep him. He's the face of that franchise, and why they would move him is beyond me.

They would move him because they have so many great young outfielders.

The price would be through the roof. They would want Bundy plus top prospects. I can't see it happening.

McCutchen wouldn't cost Bundy or anything close. He had a pretty average year and he's 30. If the Pirates sell they are selling low because they have some of the best young outfielders in the game, not because they are rebuilding.

In related Pirates news, there are now reports that Pittsburgh won't be offering Garrit Cole any type of extension. He's got 3 arb years left and Scott Boras as an agent.

And injury concerns that would get PA lit up like a pinball machine.

You think a guy who is a year off a 5.8fWAR, 2 years off a 6.8 and 3 years off an 8.4fWAR is going to be available for less than Bundy because he had one miserable season? Is Adam Jones pretty much free to whoever wants him then?

    • So I looked up the rule book and I can't find anything that says this is the case. Maybe I'm missing it because the rules for unearned runs can be convuluted to say the least. "For purposes of calculating earned runs under Rule 9.16, the runner who begins an inning on second base pursuant to this rule shall be deemed to be a runner who has reached second base because of a fielding error, but no error shall be charged to the opposing team or to any player. For purposes of Rule 9.02, the Official Scorer shall keep records of the number of times each batter and runner is placed at second base in accordance with this rule." In the rulebook under unearned runs it states, "An earned run is a run for which a pitcher is held accountable. In determining earned runs, the Official Scorer shall reconstruct the inning without the errors (which exclude catcher’s interference) and passed balls, giving the benefit of the doubt always to the pitcher in determining which bases would have been reached by runners had there been errorless play. For the purpose of determining earned runs, an intentional base on balls, regardless of the circumstances, shall be construed in exactly the same manner as any other base on balls. (a)  The Official Scorer shall charge an earned run against a pitcher every time a runner reaches home base by the aid of safe hits, sacrifice bunts, a sacrifice fly, stolen bases, putouts, fielder’s choices, bases on balls, hit batters, balks or wild pitches (including a wild pitch on third strike that permits a batter to reach first base) before fielding chances have been offered to put out the offensive team. For the purpose of this rule, a defensive interference penalty shall be construed as a fielding chance. A wild pitch is solely the pitcher’s fault and shall contribute to an earned run just as a base on balls or a balk." I don't see where it states a batter that reaches on a fielder's choice due to a runner being being on due to error.
    • Joe Posnanski wrote a wonderful book, called “The Baseball 100,” his 100 greatest players. It’s full of wonderful quotes, but it leaves out a quote that is not just all of Baseball in three words, but that applies to all of life. ”Sometimes you suck.” Adam Jones. God bless Adam Jones. Yes, Hyde makes boneheaded decisions almost every game. Yes Mike should have done this or not done that, Yes Cowser shouldn’t have thrown that way, Ryan shouldn’t have missed the fly, yada yada. I was screaming as loud as anyone. My wife said,”I thought you liked baseball,” But now it’s tomorrow.  “Sometimes you suck.” Charge on.
    • Game 4 of Yankees series. It’s one game, but one game could be the difference in the division, having to play in the WC series, and home field advantage.  Things to consider…  How did games 1-3 go versus the NYY?  Should we ease Bradish back in a lower pressure spot so he’s not too amped up for his own good? Do we play matchups and go with a LH SP in OPACY? What happens in Irvin’s start today?
    • 9/9, 17, all Orioles.  I had 3 in common with Spy Fox's similar all Oriole grid.
    • Ugh…brown has negative hEAR
    • Since this thread has got more life than I thought it should, I'll add my two cents rather than just a quip. Last night pissed me off but then most losses do. I turned the game off when the A's tied the score in the top of the ninth. Figured that was the ball game. That it took another inning to lose surprised me. 16-9 in March/April with 4 to go and this much angst? Going to be a long year on OH. 😀 My approch is if the players making all that money can compartmentalize, darn it so can I. I sure have never had their physical talents so....  Got up this morning - sun shining - I'm still here - family is still here - play ball. IMHO, the only games worth really fretting over are family and health.
