Probably just a convenient way to let him make 1-2 rehab starts before pitching in a major league game.

Fortunately AAA has the MLB balls now, so we should be okay there.  I hope the path to a AAA rehab assignment will go smoothly, but must confess I'm halfway expecting some other diversion that may reinforce the Alex Cobb as Roger Dorn notion I have going a little bit.

On a mile-high level this could help as his arm will be fresher if he can find a good enough stretch in June/July for a wildcard aspirant to have use for him.

If a MLB pitcher is on a rehab assignment, they will use MLB balls when they pitch, no matter the level.

Thanks Joey!  I had not realized that yet - guess that is a change since last year when I was remembering Cobb's reluctance to throw minor league games because of the ball.

Technically, Cobb was not on a rehab assignment last year.   He had an option remaining and agreed to be optioned to begin the season since he signed so late and needed to get the rust off.    Since it wasn’t a rehab assignment, he wasn’t using the major league balls.
