Good points and comments.  A couple questions: What would the likely farm ranking be if we had a 5-10 pick instead of the number 1 overall?  And will the new regime get the credit with Santander, or will  Duquette?  I know that he battled injuries since the Rule V.

Why not give credit to Elias and Duquette?

Fine with me.   One thing we know: the O’s wouldn’t have Santander but for Duquette.    One thing we don’t know: what role Elias’ staff has played in Santander’s development this year.

The Rays dumped a promising young lefty who ended up with the Dodgers. At the time I wondered why we didn’t jump on him.

The Dodgers traded something for Kolarek, who is a 30-year old LOOGY, not really a guy we needed. Assuming you're talking about Sadler (a righty), the Dodgers also traded something for him after he was DFAed, so he never hit the waiver wire.

Yes I meant Sadler. I thought he was a lefty. And I know that the Dodgers picked him up before he hit the waiver wire. I don’t remember what they traded for him, but I’m sure it wasn’t very much, and I’m curious as to why the Orioles were not willing to pay that price, because according to the article I read he was let go more because of a roster crunch than because of any flaws on his part

ZiPS' projections for Mancini for 2021-22 are very close to a cut and paste from 2020; BA, OBP, SLG vary no more than .003;  OPS+ either 113 or 114, WAR 1.9-2.0

Szymborski  promotes the idea of trading Villar and Mancini.

No, when he mentions Mancini, he then downplays the idea.  That's hardly promoting it.

The team could theoretically trade Trey Mancini, who has largely rehabilitated his value from 2018, but I’m not sure they need to, considering that there are three additional seasons until he hits free agency, and that 1B/corner OF/DH types are simply not valued as highly in baseball as they once were, perhaps to the point that they’re currently undervalued (see the Edwin Encarnación trade).

ZiPS still isn’t buying into Mancini completely (he was really awful in 2018), but his projection is now back in the league-average player territory. League-average players have value, else we’d use WAA instead of WAR for everything! I’m slightly more optimistic than ZiPS is as Mancini’s plate discipline has been slowly but steadily improving on a yearly basis, and one of the elements of his big 2017 — a BABIP that wasn’t supported by his peripheral numbers — isn’t present in the system. Of course, ZiPS takes that stuff into consideration as well, but I think given my history, nobody would accuse me of wearing black-and-orange colored glasses! Mancini’s a regular ol’ good player and there’s nothing wrong with that, apart from his outfield play, where he’s likely a win worse every year. It’s yet another reason to release Davis; any time you’re playing Davis at first, you’re likely sticking Mancini in the outfield, where his lousiness has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Nathan Witt, 17th round pick in '17. In Class A now.

29 years old relief pitcher.  I am sure if he passed through waivers we would have made a claim.

    • Ah. So you can only get one pick per player? That’s a bummer. Reasonable, I suppose. But a bummer nonetheless
    • It's true that this has been discussed, and there are differing schools of thought.  Some, like myself, feel that the resources required in a Crochet deal, might be better served addressing a more impactful need for 2024: a ToR starter.  As a starter beginning next season, it's likely Crochet's impact will be higher as a strong ToR starter through the final two years of control.  In the meantime, there are quite a few very solid veteran late inning relievers that we could deal for in order to satisfy that need, and that wouldn't require near the cost of a Crochet.
    • It makes sense to me for multiple reasons. 1) IMO we do not have the requisite pitching talent in order to matchup favorably against the leagues best in a 7 game series in October. That needs to change. 2) We don’t need extra offense IMO. Nor a back up catcher. We will be fine offensively if we don’t have one considering without both we are number one in the sport. 3) We could resign Burnes with that 50 million (not sure where you are getting that number). But so many here believe it will be a bad deal. And having another #1 in house protects us from having to be leveraged against signing him.
    • Starter and then reliever and then back to starter. Risky risky risky.
    • Why do we need to outbid someone for Skubal? We still have Bradish and Grayson for years to come. Also a punchers chance at resigning Corbin Burnes. You know what our record was before we signed Burnes? Best record in the AL. You know what our record has been since Bradish got hurt? Tracked down Yankees and took 3 game lead. We have resources to sign players next year. Elias is a value vs risk guy. He got Burnes with Joey Ortiz which is a top 50-60 prospect. He’s not giving up top 10 prospect for a player with 178 innings pitched. I like Crochet a lot but his track record isn’t long enough.
    • You can sign a Chris Bassitt/Eovaldi/Gray type guy and trade for someone else.  If I were the Os, I would be trying to acquire a pitcher like Detmers, Cabrera, etc…someone with a great arm that we can take away from a garbage org and “fix them”. I also think a Luzardo deal could happen as I could see the Os trying to pry him away for 70 cents on the dollar and I could see Miami saying, we need to do something with him.
    • 6-4 (54 RS, 34 RA) 7-3 (63 RS, 59 RA) 6-4 (40 RS, 28 RA) 7-3 (43 RS, 31 RA) 6-4 (48 RS, 38 RA) 7-3 (58 RS, 29 RA) 7-3 (50 RS, 28 RA) 4-6 (61 RS, 60 RA 7-3 (46 RS, 51 RA) 3-1 vs. TEX, 2-1 at SEA, 2-1 at OAK Three series wins following the first 10-game segment where the O’s had a losing record.  The O’s were outvoted this segment thanks to yesterday’s 19-8 beatdown, but I’ll take 7-3 any day.
