The Jonathan Villar Appreciation Thread

I didn’t really know much about Jonathan Villar when we acquired him.    He wasn’t having a very good year at the time and I wasn’t expecting much from him.

You know what?    The guy played pretty darned well for us.   Not only that, he was exciting on the basepaths.    Yeah, he made the occasional overly aggressive plays, but he also got away with them a lot.   Overall, he was judged one of the most productive baserunners in MLB by all the advanced metrics — the absolute best by some of them.    And, he was an energetic guy on a team that needed some energy.    

Good luck in Miami, Jonathan.   I enjoyed your brief stay here.

Really enjoyed his stay in Baltimore but glad he is moving on to sunnier climes.  He will do well in Miami!

Villar was just DFA’d by the Cubs. Any interest in him once he’s released?

He’s been terrible it sounds like.  Cubs fans were so happy to see him go.

Only 150 at bats this season. He had a 101 OPS+ last year in a full season.

He could be washed but I’d take him over Odor who hasn’t had a decent season in years and can only play second base. So the interest for me would be contingent on cutting Odor.

He also played 97 games at 3b for the Mets last year. 

There's a chance he's just done, but I think odds are that he's better than both Nevin and Odor the rest of this year if given the same opportunities.

Villar his rejuvenated his career once with us. He’s in the same spot at only 31 years old. He’s a stop gap until Gunnar/Westburg are ready.

The Mets had a lot of injuries and slumps in the infield last year and they were lucky to have Villar to plug the holes. 18 homers in 454 ABs.

Depending on his defense at 3B, maybe. If they get Urias back and put him on 2B and Villar at 3rd makes them a marginally better team.

Is Villar better than Jonathan Arauz?  The answer is Yes. Incremental improvements to a long way. Look at the bullpen, and the Austin Voth claim thread.
