The real question is, if this dude were in the draft, where would he get drafted?  It could be like adding a top 5-10 pick.  Our franchise desperately needs talent.  

It is a hard cap now. There is not going over and paying a penalty.

The Orioles will not be among the teams with the highest allotment next year. The teams with the highest allotment will be the teams that have competitive balance picks in Round B of the 2020 MLB Draft, namely the Marlins, Tigers, Rays, Brewers Reds and Twins.

The Orioles will be among the teams with the next highest allotment, those with competitive balance picks in Round A of the 2020 MLB draft which includes the Orioles, Pirates, Royals, D'Backs, Padres, Rockies, Indians and Cardinals.

The difference between the first and second group last year was about $550K. 

For the 2019-20 period, those two groups were swapped.

The remainder of the teams all have the same allotment (approximately $550K less than the second group), except the Braves who will have half as much due to their tomfoolery in the International market.

Teams also forfeit part of their allotment if they sign a QO declining free-agent, and slots can also be traded.

We just need talent. Prospects are going to fail. That’s why you need depth. Get as much talent as you can.

To be fair all you have to do is read the scouting reports and look at the statistics.  Your characterization that it is impossible to make an informed judgment after doing even a modicum of research is baffling to me.

Yes.  This is a no brainer.  The Orioles need talent, and they need to be willing to spend money to get it, evening some of it is a miss.

And adding a hindsight anecdotal observation of a cherry picked other player who almost everyone agreed at the time was a no brainer doesnt really carry much weight.

We could likely get this guy if we really want him and he's willing to post this year. If next year, all bets are off.
