Pick the Starting Lineup (Yes, It's Early)

I remember reading somewhere that a hard limit on number of pitchers would be in force. Is that true or still being considered?

I believe the 26th man must be a position player. That will be in effect as well as the 3-batter minimum for pitchers. I think that's it though.

Open Day vs Yankees and Garrett Cole.

(R) Hays CF

(S) Wilkerson  2B   (783 OPS vs righties last season)

(R) Mancini RF

(S) Santander  LF (2 for 3 with a double vs Cole)

(R) Nunez DH

(L) Sisco  C   (772 vs righties and 1 for 3 with a HR  vs Cole)

(L) Ruiz   3B (766 OPS in 2nd half mostly vs righties)

(R) Iglesias SS

(L) Davis  1B

Your assuming Cole starts game 1 in Baltimore I wouldn't be surprised if Tanaka starts game 1 and Cole goes game 2 so he would then start the home opener in Yankee stadium.

I want you to pick all 162 starting lineups.  And 40 man rosters for each day of the season.  I think you could get this done in an afternoon.

Alex Cobb will suffer an oblique injury during his first outing and go on the injured list.  He will be replaced in the rotation and on the 26 man roster by Kohl Stewart on the 2nd day of the season.  That's all I got.

Great post. One thing I’ve noticed is a lot of posters seem to think that Santander will play RF and Mancini in LF.  I just don’t get that. Santander, if hitting, is the prototype RF.

Also, I think a lot of people sell Smith Jr. short. He’s going to get a lot of PT in LF until Mountcastle is up for good.  DJ Stewart’s injury affects that too.

Alberto, may be platoon proof to start the year.

Davis against Cole is 3Ks right now.  Book it.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Alberto play 2B with either Smith or Wilkerson in LF

Under Hyde last season Mancini started 78 games in right and only 5 in left.   That is mainly because there is more ground to cover at Camden Yard in left.   Santander to faster than Mancini and can cover the ground in left better.

You may be right about Smith in left until Stewart is ready on some days.  But for the home opener I have to go with  Davis over Smith. Neither are great players at this  point but Smith is not the guy to push Davis out of the the home opener IMO.

Alberto needs to have a good spring vs right-hander to win an opening day start at 2B IMO.  He could do that but I think he needs to earn it.   In 2019 Wilkerson had a 783 OPS vs righties and Alberto had a 609 OPS vs righties.

Some fans seem to have handed the everyday 2B job to Alberto because of his overall numbers last season and he played well defensively there.   Alberto splits  are dramatic.   On a team that prides itself  on its analytics I think Alberto has some work to do to earn that everyday 2B job.

Wilkerson hit righties pretty well.  He came through the minors as a 2B and has pretty good range there.   His splits are also dramatic but in the opposite  direction.   They made be a good platoon pair depending on what happens in ST.

Can we do the late-April/early-May lineup instead after Davis proves he is who we think he is (relegating him to the bench if not finally removed from the roster) and Mountcastle is promoted. When that happens, I'm going with:

1.       CF- Austin Hays (R)

2.       2B- Hanser Alberto (R)

3.       1B- Trey Mancini (R)

4.       DH- Renato Nunez (R)

5.       RF- Anthony Santander (S)

6.       LF- Ryan Mountcastle (R)

7.       3B- Rio Ruiz (L)

8.       C- Pedro Severino (R)

9.       SS- Jose Iglesias (R)

Last year, O's fans gave a standing ovation when Davis was taken out of the home opener. I don't see why there's any need for Davis to start the opener (or make regular starts at all), assuming he doesn't show any improvement in spring.

When Davis is no longer starting, I like this lineup. It would be fun to watch, especially having three young guys in the OF. I like a Stewart, Hays, Santandar OF with Mancini at 1B and Nunez at DH until Mountcastle is ready. Alberto could repeat last season at 2B. Iglesias is a good SS and Ruiz at 3B will be given every opportunity to have the job. I could find the catcher position an issue, but we have one in the minors making his way up, hopefully, very quickly. I think our optimal lineup is middle of the pack in the AL. Maybe I'm drinking the orange koolaid too.

I was just doing a projected 26 man roster and came back to this thread. It really looks like when Mountcastle is promoted is when Davis will have to be removed from the roster.

I totally agree with your lineup.

SP Cobb
SP Means
SP Stewart
SP Wojo
SP Akin or Hess
SP/RP Bailey
RP Fry
RP Rucker
RP Armstrong

2B Alberto
3B Ruiz
SS Iglesias
LF Mountcastle
CF Hays
RF Santander
DH Nunez
Bench DJ Stewart or Wilkerson

If Mancini isn’t traded, I totally agree. He has to go at that point unless he can magically hit again.

    • Getting to hear Jason Benetti, Carlos Pena and Kirk Gibson some of the afternoon was a treat. It was new to me earlier this year Gibson is still broadcasting almost a decade after his Parkinson's diagnosis...good for him. Benetti dumping the White Sox for the Tigers gives me some Miller to San Francisco vibes...he is excellent. Baseball as entertainment - it is wonderful that Carlos Pena, literally the player pushed aside so Scott Hatteberg could play offense more efficiently, has become a strong SABR-oriented analyst.
    • I don't think the rookies get to pick what the wear.  I 100% am sure the vets are picking these outfits.
    • I’d be shocked if the O’s do better than 2-4, and I’m half expecting them to go 1-5.
    • Worst female impersonator ever!
    • I watched the inning where the Tigers scored their 2 runs.  Our friend Meadows had two check swings that easily could have been called strikes, but instead he walked to load the bases.  Carpenter popped out but then Perez had an insane at-bat where he fouled off a ton of pitches, wasn't fooled by anything, and then delivered a bases loaded double which proved to be the difference. Our guys would likely have whiffed on just about every pitch in those at-bats, but their guys have a crazy amount of confidence right now and it has served them very well.   I do think they have a good chance of winning out and ending with 88 just based on who they play, which means we have to go 3-3 this week or we are out of the 4 spot.  Hopefully their luck will finally run out against us (assuming we can win enough to get in), but if it doesn't, I would love to see them knock out the Yankees.
    • If they played baseball another month maybe. Elias has been pretty much no comment on anything other than time is not on his. His last Lat issues had him control problems ( I Believe ) when he first came back. I'm just happy to have the others back.
    • 6 games left, they haven’t won more than one game in a series since the beginning of the month (against the White Sox for context). I see no reason to think they’ll do any better than 2-4 for remainder of the season.    Plus, i said it “feels” like. It’s an emotional response, not an analytical one. I’m going off the premise that they’ve been an absolute mess for quite a while and a playoff spot seems like a weird place to be for a team that’s played .400 ball since the All Star Break.  They could sweep the rest of the season, who knows? Just saying it feels bleak.
