Because it doesn't make sense to cut young players with a bunch of years of control, especially when the system is not deep with CFers and he's not that far removed from being decent. He has defensive tools. They don't NEED to cut him yet, but another season like 2019 and they could.

He's a minor leaguer. Plenty of good teams have bad minor leaguers.

Because he’s in AAA, and they haven’t given up on him yet. But do you think Pirates are hoping to acquire him? I doubt it.

I like him a lot, but his debut was pretty disastrous.

Exactly. Mullins is kind of the type of guy that a team like us should be looking to acquire. You aren't going to get anything for him.

Formerly a decent enough prospect, say team top ten-ish, that has some ML tools.

Lots of team control left and can spend time in the minors.

Flawed enough and/or failed at the ML level such that the original team gave up on them.

That's basically why we have Ruiz, Nunez, and Alberto. Not world beaters but adequate enough for a bad team, and if all goes perfectly maybe can grow enough to still contribute in 3 years when we hope to be good. You collect enough of those guys that you hope a couple might stick. If not they are gone in 3 years and Moose remembers them in a bad Orioles thread 10 years from now.

Now he might prove in short order that he's reached his peak and should be DFAd, but we don't need to yet.

You really seem to form impressions and give up on guys quickly.   2019 was a disaster for Mullins but I won’t be shocked if he rebounds.
