John Means 2021

Saw part of the Means interview on SC.  The thing he mentioned that he feels really changed him was the fastball velocity increase.  He feels that the separation he has with his CU and the FB right now really elevated his game.

I said it before but I think the increase in velocity in 2020 was the best thing to come out of the shortened season.

For all the fascination some posters have here about ground balls I'd just like to point out that Means collected five outs via fly balls caught by infielders.

Generally speaking fly ball pitchers have more IFF and more strikeouts.  Those are your high percentage plays.

FB pitchers are great for a lot of reasons.

The problem with FB pitchers are homers.

I prefer a GB pitcher but that’s not the end all be all.

Eh, not so much.

You know what gets hit a long way?  A sinker that doesn't.

An elevated fastball is a great counter for an uppercut swing.

Any pitch that stays up and doesn’t do what it’s supposed to gets hit a long way.

That just isn't true.

You float up a four seamer and it stays up that's a ball at the shoulders.  Not many of those get hit a long way.

Ehhh..maybe..of course, if you don’t throw it well, it may not go up and could be more middle up and that ball gets crushed.

I thought that Means was a really good pitcher. I may be selling him short? Is he the most "promising" pitcher the O's have had since Eric Bedard? The kind of guy that if things went right could be the next Mussina or Palmer?

He can never really be the next Mussina and Palmer due to his age.    But he could be as good or better than Bedard.   I’m not ready to say he is yet, but I’m not ruling it out.

I keep marveling at how we’ve had numerous very high draft pick pitchers or other guys who became really highly touted, and somehow this guy may be better than all of them.
