Is this team bad enough for the number 1 pick?

And watch out for the Rangers they are 3-18 in their last 21 games and only two games ahead of the Orioles in the standings. There are some spectacularly bad baseball teams this season.

It is almost as if tanking, as a strategy, is less effective when more teams employ it.

It is as if there is a race for the top and a race for the bottom of the standings.  And the Orioles are finding an amazing amount of competition for who sucks the most.

Is Elijah Green that great of a talent, because tanking in baseball seems far from a guarantee on building in the future compared to basketball and football. In basketball one great player can turn a bad team into a playoff contender instantly. And in football if you land a franchise QB building a playoff team gets a whole lot easier.

In baseball one great player doesn't move the needle much if the surrounding talent is bad. Tanking in baseball only makes sense IMO, when it's associated with cutting payroll and holding off on spending until a team is ready to compete.

The desire to get better players is still there. Nationals got Strasburg and Harper #1 overall by sucking in back to back years. One player doesn't make a team, but it sure improves your situation.

Last year was a nice break (baseball season) from the years surrounding it but it was far enough from the norm that it doesn't mean much.

It meant virtually nothing.   Just saying if you are measuring progress by the W/L record at this point in the season, you can’t ignore the fact that the O’s won more games last year in 60 games than we have so far this year in 73.
