The Maryland/Duke Drinking Game

You're really really reaching here when trying to compare Towson, Loyola, etc to the University of Maryland. There is a reason that ACC games are broadcast on CBS and ESPN nationally and that 90% of the top players in the NBA (that went to college) went to power conference schools. It's a ridiculous comparison, in my humble opinion.

The Baysox play pro baseball but it is a different level.

Towson, et al is still a D1 college program. Yes, there level of competition is not what the Terps play but is not like they are in a league that is designated differently like AA versus the majors.

So, my answer to you on whether i agree with you is yes and no.

How about a comparison between the Washington Wizards and the Maryland Nighthawks (ABA)?

They are technically on the same level as leagues, but one is a lower level of competition.

And to be honest, when you're a kid and you first start watching, you have no idea that Coppin, Loyola, or other schools even exist. All I knew was that there were schools called North Carolina, Florida State, etc. There was also one from Maryland, and since I lived in Maryland, they were who I rooted for.

Actually, back in the day, I liked Duke, too. They were good and had a cool name. Luckily I was wise enough to grow out of it. :002_sbiggrin:

This was supposed to be a thread about a simple game where the point was drinking large quantities of alcohol in an effort to get drunk and disorderly. Where did this bickering come from? ;)

Where did the bickering come from??? THE ALCOHOL YOU FOOL:002_stongue: !!!!

They had to drink so much that they've been drunk for almost a week now!

You should be flattered really.

Wow, you made it to the semi finals for the NIT...Way to go!! That is impressive!

I will tell you what....When the Terps get to the point where their accomplishments are even 1/4 the accomplishments of Duke, then come talk to me.

BTW, i noticed how you dodged my question in the other thread about Duke being overrated.....Were they overrated when they made the Terps look like Coppin St?

You are a Duke fan AND an Oriole fan? I used to like you.

For the most part, I love sports rivalries. Some of them are overblown, but they're usually overblown for a reason. I used to love the MD/Duke rivalry, except then it got out of hand. It actually sort of drove me away from MD basketball, and, shockingly, I find myself now more than able to sympathize with Duke in many cases.

I won't deny that there are some great stories here and a ton of fantastic games. But the whole thing has gone too far. I've watched and followed my share of MD home games against Duke, and the fan behavior has been absolutely appalling. Profanity I can deal with. I'm no angel in that department myself. However, it doesn't stop there. Some of the abuse I've heard hurled at the Duke players would make me cry. Physical threats, gay jokes, overly personal remarks...where's the line? I'm not sure about it in that area, but I know that making sexually explicit insults directed at J.J. Redick's 13-year-old sister is WAY beyond it. That's just sick and cruel. And making repeated harrassing phone calls to his cell phone at all hours of the night is illegal. When a rivalry turns into this, it's not a rivalry any more, because people have lost sight of the fact that it's JUST A GAME. It's a stain on the program. MD fans shouldn't be acting like that. It's just basketball.

  • 3 weeks later...
Here are the rules I came up with today, brainstorming with a couple friends.

1 drink

• Mike Jones hits a 3-pointer

• Official time out

• Sideline report

• Lead change

• A shirtless Duke fan is shown

2 drinks

• A white Duke player chest bumps Sheldon Williams

• Every 10 points for each team

• Will Bowers checks into the game

• A Duke player fouls out

• Maryland’s 3-game winning streak vs. Duke is referenced

3 drinks

• Dick Vitale calls Coach K “Michelangelo”

• Duke’s ranking is referenced (including any reference to Maryland’s impressive all-time record vs. teams ranked #1)

• The proud Duke tradition of floor slapping is shown either on tape or during the game, or Wojo is mentioned by the commentators

• “Gone in Sixty Seconds” is referenced

• Coach K’s position as Team USA coach is referenced

4 drinks

• J.J. misses a free throw

• Dave Neil checks into the game

Ross Perkins checks into the game (this link best viewed in IE, at least for me)

• Coach K is seen uttering an obscenity (see the bottom of this page for examples)

• A Duke coed is deemed “doable” by at least 2 males in our group (or vice versa). Not including cheerleaders, although you could include them and it wouldn't affect anything.

5 drinks

• J.J. picks his nose

• Dick Vitale’s partner calls himself “lucky”

• Dick Vitale criticizes a Duke player/coach/play. Note: This does not include analysis of what went wrong (which is inevitable, since they’re playing Maryland). This is only to be used if Vitale voluntarily admits the fallibility of something related to Duke.

"Speedo Man" makes an appearance

• Shavlik Randolph, just for the heck of it, is charged with a foul

Any other ideas? :002_scool:

This is a good drinking game... you should add one more thing, though:

Maryland fans "shoot" themselves in the head once they realize they will never win another national championship again.

This event would be a wonderful thing for everyone involved! Just kidding!

    • First of all, I never said Irvin wasn’t adequate. I’m perfectly happy with him in the rotation.    Secondly, I didn’t confirm anything. We aren’t going to slowly sink. If the Os don’t make one move, they still get into the playoffs and at that point, anything can happen. What we aren’t right now, in all likelihood, is a team that appears prime to win a WS. I think we need more pitching for that but sinking?  No, that’s overboard and ridiculous.
    • On this promotion we agree. It's time for Coby Mayo to be playing everyday 3B in Baltimore.
    • Oh, I also saw a Jackson vs Henderson "debate" in this thread somewhere. While I think Holliday is going to be a very good player, and yes, he out produced Henderson at the same levels at a younger age, but Henderson is a physical specimen/oddity due to size, athleticism, speed and arm. He's truly a 5-tool player and is the kind of player you build your franchise around. I see more of a solid average to above average major leaguer in Holliday when I look at the tools vs a generational talent. If I had to choose between the two, it's not even close who I would choose, but that's not a hit on Holliday, but more of shout out to the kind of talent we're watching with Gunnar. I'll be honest, he very well may be the most athletic superstar the Orioles have ever had. If Holliday can make himself a quality second baseman or maybe even transition to CF, he's going to be a very good player at the major league level at the top of a lineup as an on base machine. If the automatic strike zone gets adopted in some form at the major league level, and I believe it will be next year, he becomes even more dangerous.
    • Roy , thanks for showing these stats side by side . I didnt realize just how good Mayo really is . Now I’m going with don’t trade Coby camp . They better get some return if they do
    • Good Lord, somewhere I lost track of this thread only to see it derailed into 10 others subjects. 1) Please keep on the subject of Jackson Holliday 2) My thoughts on Jackson Holliday's "Athleticism." First off, Holliday has very good speed, has made some very good plays defensively while on the move, and is playing professional baseball with the best in the world, that in in of itself makes him above average athletically. Now, saying that, he's not an extreme quick twitch guy and he doesn't have that explosive first step you'd typically want in a shortstop. That combined with his below average arm was why I pretty quickly concluded that shortstop would be a stretch for him without additional physical development.  3) The arm woes could very well be from him trying to improve his arm strength this offseason. I don't know what his routine was, but watching him lob balls around the infield tells me he was saving his arm and was kind of treating it with "kid gloves" which suggests he was not 100%. How much that has affected his hitting, I don't know, but his domination by major league pitchers was most likely not because of elbow discomfort. 4) I've said for awhile that Jackson Holliday is untouchable along with Basallo and Mayo, and I still think it would take a ton of a return that would include controllable players before I would consider moving him, but I'm starting to think he might be the guy that could get an impact return that I'd be willing to move.  Now why would I be willing to move him? Quite simply because I would have no issue with an infield of Mayo at 3B and Westburg at 2B. Now, before people overreact here and say I'm down on Holliday, I'm not. I still think he's going to end up a very high OBP hitter with some pop and would look very good on top of this lineup one day. At no point do you give him away and he's certainly not traded for just a rental for this year, but I would listen.
    • I agree this is the most questionable part of the Elias MO. Although it is hard to dispute results so far, unless you've already jumped ship following 5 losses.  Personally (as an armchair GM) I would have sold high on Hays, Mullins, Urias, to net some young arms. Borderline Santander and Mountcastle too (though their peak might be now vs. last year). Maybe even Cano after last year! But this is not only hindsight, it also overlooks whatever value chemistry, veteranosity, seniority, continuity, risk mgt., etc. hold in the mysteries of the Sigbot.
    • Good point....have an embarrassment of riches in their system. It really is a testament to their scouting and development that they regularly have guys to "give away" when they want a supporting player to help their bench of all things.  So, then, Mateo as the headliner is not as farfetched as it seems for the right team and Dodgers could be the right team for him as well.
