Leandro Arias - International prospect

Recommended Posts

Leandro Arias is linked to the Orioles 2021-22 international signings.

From the write-up:  "

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

Arias is a switch-hitting shortstop with power potential from both sides and one of the most intriguing prospects on the market. He has good bat-to-ball skills ..."

Who is linking him to the Orioles, and who gave him these grades?

According to mlb.com, the Orioles are the favorites to sign Arias. I assume that the write-up and grades set forth in the linked article are from Jesse Sanchez. Here is the statement linking Arias to the Orioles:

Arias trains with Sandy Nin, a member of MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program, in the Dominican Republic. The Orioles are the favorite to sign him.

Here are the grades:

Hit: 50 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

And here is the link to the top 50 international prospects. Arias is ranked 46th, and further information will be found when viewing his full profile.

(I’m sorry that I can’t figure out how to change the black background and white text from the copied portions of the article.)

By the time the Orioles reach agreements with Tavera and Arias they should still have somewhere around $3.5 million left out of their $6.26 million dollar pool of money to fill out the class with another 12 to 15 signees.  Their bonus pool was about $5.7 million Jan 2021.

Baseball America projects Tavera to get 1.5 to 2 million dollars.

Arias was not in their top 30 list.  Players outside the top 30 historically get less than $1 million.

So I'm hoping they still have $3.5 million to pass out in 6 figure bonuses.

That could get them 10 players in the $400,000 to $300,000 range.

This January they gave their top 2 signees combined $2.5 million.  Then signed  6  more between $400 and 300 thousand.  Then still sprinkled in bonuses $200,000 and below.  Some bonuses weren't announced so I'm thinking they were 5 figure bonuses

The  best player, especially at the plate, this year was year de Los Santos who cost them $350,000.

Their best prospect, to me, is the 1.3 million dollar power bat and power armed catcher Basallo.

#22 and #46 overall. I think that puts us at least middle of the pack in DSL signings. That’s a big jump from being dead last or just a DNP(did not participate)

Kolby Perez has been doing work. Hopefully we can start landing some #10 DSL types, assuming that we won’t keep having top draft picks.

What does one have to do with the other?

Well, having the no. 15-16 guy as your top signee, and 45-46 as your second guy, would be middle of the pack.   No. 22 would be a bit below average for a top signee.   But let’s not take those rankings as gospel anyway.   It’s one source’s opinion.

Counting 2022 ETA's by hand, it looks like Fangraphs Longenhagen/Goldstein have Leandro Arias up to #5 among 2022 ETA's in their update to International Prospects today.

That would be an intriguing signing.  You could have Arias, Westburg, Henderson, and Mayo to man 2b, 3b, and SS all with their prime years to hit at about the same time.  Perhaps one is trade bait for pitching?

Or, more likely, we’ll be lucky if two end up as ML regulars.
