Its a matter of if the O's have someone better.   Right now they don't.   He is their backup infielder.

I look at Odor as buying time to see what we actually do have developing.  I'll be rooting for the Odor for sure, but also for the guys behind him.

Sure they do.  Finding someone better is easy.

We’ll see if they add another infielder or two before the season begins.   As things stand right now, I think it’s likely that Odor makes the team.   The competition is not very stiff.

OK, who would be better that you thing the O's could get on a one year contract.    Gunnar, Westburg and Ortiz may arrive next spring so the O's don't want block them.   So it would probably be a one year contract  or a AAA contract.

Odor has been worth a TOTAL of .7 WAR the last 3 seasons. I do not need to go through the litany of players that improve on that.

And if you can obtain real talent on a multi year deal, you do it and let things play out after that.

I didn't ask for a litany.  I asked for one.

Elias did not go through 3 years of last place teams and development of the farm system to block his best prospects now.  Its not reasonable to think he would do that by signing a FA infielder to a long term contract.

Gosh, isn't it terrible how, if Elias signs a guy for more than one year how he is irrevocably bound to play that player for the full extent of the contract.

I know other teams are allowed to trade, bench or even release players but that avenue isn't open to Elias.

Henderson - 17 PA in AA

Westburg - 130 PA in AA

Ortiz - 67 PA in AA

I don’t think you plan for 2023 expecting any of those guys to be on your 2023 OD roster.  They’ve all got a lot more development to do.   I heard Kevin Goldstein say on a podcast that he expected the O’s to leave Henderson in AA most or all of the year after being aggressive with him last year.

If one or more of them excels to the point where they are ready in early 2023, you can worry about it then.  I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to sign a solid infielder through 2023.

I don't agree.   Its all about Westburg, Ortiz, Vavra and Gunnar's performance on how they move up.  Westburg had a good Sept in AA.   He could be promoted to AAA a month or two into the season if he starts fast.   Vavra had a good 184 PA at AA.  These guys are not far from the majors.

The O's have six infielders that have a chance to be in the majors and succeed when including  Mateo and Urias in the next year plus.   I see no reason to spend money on a muiti year contract for an infielder to block those O's prospects.

The O's also have a player that has been called the O's defensive SS in the organization in Grenier if they need a utility player as long as he is not picked in the Rule 5 draft.

If the O's want to spend they should spend on pitching and a back up catcher IMO.  Make a great offer to Greinke.   That move has a chance to move the needle.

You think the money spent should be on Greinke and a back up C?  Wtf?  SMH.

I highly doubt there will be any significant signings until we start seeing a few of the prospects produce in the MLB.  Maybe next winter depending on the group of FAs (and system holes) we'll see some signings.  I don't think they are signing players with wins in mind at this point though.  More like reclamation projects or specific roles.  Odor almost fits the reclamation profile.  A guy who could hit 30+ HR and lucks into his career .722 OPS may have some type of trade value.

True, those are legit risks so often overlooked in our dreams for a better tomorrow.  When the team has so many holes (especially IF/pitching), spending money at this point won't really do anything other than buy a few wins here/there and maybe a little goodwill with the fans.  We'll have to deal with the holes in the MLB level for a little longer.  As some prospects start performing at the MLB level, I would hope we'll see these types of holes legitimately addressed.

I do feel really good about the depth of infield prospects Elias has assembled.   We don’t need every one of them to max out in order to fill out a roster over the next 2-3 years, we just need a decent success rate.   It’s impressive what Elias has done in that area, as the team had practically no infield prospects when he arrived.
