Orioles Spring Training Rampup

Assuming the deal is ratified tonight, they say players can report to spring training as early as tomorrow.   Of course guys have to arrange travel, lodging, logistics, etc.   Not to mention guys who aren't from the US  probably have to get Visas.   I'll bet it's going to be 5 or 6 days before the majority of guys on our 40 man roster are practicing on the field, and probably there will be some stragglers who will take longer for various reasons.

We still have a few guys who will have arbitration cases heard unless they agree to deals before then.

We need catchers on our roster, you always start camp with a bunch of minor league Cs to catch all the pitchers you have in camp.

And they will decide which minor leaguers will get invites to MLB camp and will participate in games, which apparently might be starting as soon as a week from tomorrow.

It's going to be a hectic few weeks to prepare for the season, without even getting into the unsigned free agents which are being discussed in another thread.

So glad to have this to talk about.

FA deals and trades happen on a much more accelerated basis in the NFL and NBA than in the usual mode of MLB.   So, we know it’s possible to do this.  Front offices have had 100 days to plan for this.   Should be fun to watch, even for fans of a team fishing at the bottom of the pool.

I heard a report that many of the players on most teams are already in the area of the spring training facilities...since most of them already secured leases/AirBnBs a long time ago, plus there are several elite private training facilities in Arizona and Florida which the players have been utilizing.  Most of them should report to camp very soon.

Games starting on the 18th I believe.

Yes, the official schedule shows the O's playing split-squad games on March 18th: home against the Braves at 1:05pm, and at Bradenton against the Pirates at 6:05pm.

I hope that some of the spring training games will be televised or at least on the radio.

It will be interesting since MASN is making a business decision and not paying for their announcers to be on the road once again despite all national COVID mandates being repealed outside of masks on transportation.

MASN got shamed into doing a few games last year. They are pretty much doing these broadcasts on a shoestring budget now. Wonder who's cashing all those cable sports fee checks and where that money is going?

Meanwhile the fans get announcers trying to guess on fly balls because all they have is the broadcast feeds. It's embarrassing.

Don't we need to add some infielders?

Who is our starting SS and 3B?  Hard to imagine us rolling with an IF of Urias, Mateo, and Odor. Two 2B and a SS with questionable defense.

Unless they sign Correa, which I still don't see happening, I think they very well intend to go with those three guys up the middle this year.

The first legitimate SS prospect to reach the Orioles out of the system will probably be either Westburg or Ortiz, though Henderson could break out this year in AA and be in the conversation.

I don't think their timelines are more towards 2023 though so this could be a bridge year up the middle.

Yep, it's pathetic.

I wonder if MASN will spring for Roch to go to Sarasota?   Last year he didn't, right?   He just zoomed from Maryland.   Of course the reporters weren't allowed real access to the players anyway.   But now they are.

There was a minor league intrasquad game at Sarasota today that was open to the public, at 11AM.   No one is there to report on it.   Can't access Twitter at work, don't know if anyone in the Twitter-sphere attended and could give us some highlights.    It's March 11 and I still haven't heard a single "the ball looks good coming out of his hand" yet!

I figured you bring a guy in who can play decent defense up the middle just to give the young pitching some support.  I'm not sure who the 2B is and who the 3B is in that group.  It's probably the most underwhelming group of starting infielders I can recall in recent memory and we've had some bad ones.

He told me he's not being sent, at least as of last weekend.

Wow, an opposite field inside the park home run in the first "game" action of 2022?   No sense tempering anyone's expectations I guess!

Social media sites blocked at work so I can't click and see if there's a video attached.   But I'll be checking that link as soon as I get home tonight.

    • Wouldn’t even consider it. I wouldn’t offer anything more than the QO
    • Adley and it’s not particularly close. I’m not writing off Adley because of a second half slump.
    • This season is far from over but that doesn't mean we can't walk and chew gum at the same time. This is going to be a very interesting offseason. The Os have a lot of spots likely secured for 2025 already and yet there is plenty of uncertainty as well. Barring a trade, these guys are definitely on the team next year: Adley, Gunnar, Holliday, Mayo*, Kjerstad, Westburg, Cowser, Urias, Eflin, GRod, Kremer, Felix, Perez, DC, Rogers and Cano.  That is 16 of your 26 man roster. The salaries for those 16 players will total around $46M, give or take. With those 16 players, you have your entire starting IF (including C), 2 OFers, 3 or 4 starting pitchers, 4 or 5 relievers (depending on Rogers) and your key bench guy. *Mayo potentially could start in the minors since he has looked  bad this year but its a SSS and I think they are committed to him and Im not sure going to the minors is going to be some major help for him.  But he will be on the active roster at some point next year. The Os also have the ability to keep (meaning they are under team control...salary estimates following player) Cedric Mullins (8.5M), Mountcastle (5.5M), OHearn (8M option), G Soto (6M), Dominguez (8M option...has 500K buyout), Mateo (3.2M), Akin (2.5M) and Webb (2.2M). For your 10 remaining roster spots, you need a back up C, 1 starting OFer, 5 pitchers and 3 other offensive players. Some of the relievers I listed will be brought back but others likely traded. Those are cheap contracts but the O's need to add another legit high leverage arm and someone(s) will be left off because of that. Either way, the team has plenty of money to add to this team given the low payroll of those definitely back.  Also, keep in mind Bradish will be on the payroll next year and I am assuming they will non tender Tyler Wells. Depending on his status, it is possible they bring him back but not sure I see the point. Having so many cheap players on the roster, many of whom will be cheap for a while, gives you so much flexibility. Also, it’s certainly possible that some of the players  I listed in the definite 16 will be traded, which will open up a spot or more.
    • Your last statement I dont believe is correct with a 2 way tie against the Tigers in this scenario. We would both be 87-75 and 30-22 in the division. It would then go to interdivison record, which I believe we would win by 2 games.
    • There's no joy up here in Suxville!
    • Now we need to cheer for them this weekend.
    • The Elephant has been eliminated from catching the Orioles for a playoff spot, with 9 games remaining.
