Maverick Handley 2022

Maverick Handley, ice cold in April (.457 OPS), has been red hot in May (.857).   It would be nice to see him position himself to be Adley’s backup down the road.

As a glove first backup catcher the bar is how low?  Better than a pitcher?

.625-.650 OPS maybe? Handley is 24 and has a career MILB OPS of .617, so I doubt he will be able to get there, but I am rooting for him.

Handley continues to have a very hot bat, 4 for 5 tonight with a double and a homer to raise his OPS to .778.

Stanford kid. I remember we took him, Stowers, and Dashbach, all from Stanford in the same draft. Nice little hot streak for him.

Hanley may be one of the best receivers I’ve ever seen. He could bat .160 and I would rather have him back there than any other catcher that played for the orioles after Wieters and before AR.

Just curious.  What does he do to warrant that type of praise from you?

I guess I never looked at his stats before.  6 of 18 runners caught stealing but he's close to 50% for his short career so far.  That's outstanding.   Only 402 career AB's.  550 OPS in rookie at Aberdeen in 2019.  650 OPS at A+ at Aberdeen in 2021.  750 OPS in AA in 2022.  Should be an All-star by the time he gets to the bigs!  Haha

SSS, but his career K rate is about 29% and so far in AA it's about 19%.

All reports are that his defense is great and pitchers love throwing to him.  But his bat has always been suspect and he had a terrible April this year (.458 OPS), so it looked like maybe this was the point where he’d stall out.   Then suddenly, he’s hitting like at no other time in his career.  It’a only 4-5 weeks, but it would be fantastic if he could hit well enough to be Adley’s backup in a year or two.

If he keeps hitting like this and Adley keeps hitting like this, Adley might become his backup.  Haha.  Just kidding!

Don't look now but Handley has completely turned his season around. Now got a .376 OBP, .811 OPS and a 128 wRC+. Defense has always been elite was just a matter of if the bat was at all playable. Could be a useful back up.

I noticed that he didn’t play for 5-6 days before last night.   He’s only played in 27 of Bowie’s 50 games, so one good game at the plate can move his OPS by a lot.
