I would be very excited to land Bassitt, who I confess I had never heard of until this offseason.

That’s interesting.  You would be “very excited” for him?

I’m not sure I can go there. I will be glad we landed him but I’m 99% sure that if they sign him, I will hate the contract and be worried that he isn’t good for at least 2 years of it.

Well of course we’ll see what he costs.  But I prefer him to the other second tier guys.   He’s been consistently good over the last five years, though not the most durable guy.

I'm saving for until he's an Oriole really trying to understand how/why his 20's were so unproductive in light of how rock solid he's been the last few years.

From the age of 25-29 he only threw 190 innings.  He wasn’t bad.  He just didn’t pitch much.  He missed the 2017 season entirely.

I think he's the best realistic choice on the free agent market.

I thought that too until seeing what even back of the rotation guys like Eflin and Boyd are getting, now I am less certain that Bassitt is a realistic target. He might get 4/$90 million at the rate things are going and I don't really see the Orioles going there.

Now Michael Wacha, Sean Manaea, and Kyle Gibson are starting to feel like more realistic possibilities for the Orioles' "big" free agent starter acquisition.

Maybe that's why Ben McDonald was hyping Manaea up the other day.

I think there is little chance they get a deal done with Bassitt.

I don’t see the team going to 4/75 or thereabouts, to sign a 33 year old pitcher.

That would really surprise me.

If they don’t make trade, I think the best pitcher they can sign for 3 years is who they get…and whoever that pitcher is, will likely not be worth the deal they give them and we may say they should have just kept Lyles and had less of a commitment.

Is Bassitt worth 4/75?

Could be, managing fan expectations certainly seems to be part of Roch's responsibilities.

If it ends up being Wacha, Gibson, or Manaea on a multiyear deal, I will definitely be saying this.

    • I’m not against getting Crochet, but I see him as more of a trade that’s looking into 2025 and beyond. Crochet is likely to get rested in the second half or even put on the shelf in September.  If it’s about getting pitchers to help with a deep postseason run then Elias will have to make additional moves.  Crochet is already near double the amount of innings he’s ever pitched over an entire season. I don’t see it likely he pitches 200 innings this season after his injury history.
    • What I have heard about the batter's eye is that it is made of some kind of mesh and at certain time of day, light shines through it.   This was from a Darrell Hernaiz interview a couple of years ago.   Also, the lights aren't that good, per Hernaiz.
    • This is probably a good pivot if nothing else but the "better" pitchers on the market don't pan out. Connor Norby would seem like a player the Cubs would want. If we are willing to take on the salary. Do the Cubs really think they are contending in 2025 or 26? Hell, maybe they can add in Drew Smyly. Especially if DC looks iffy to actually make it back this season.
    • ??  That's what people mean when they say age matters. Not just based on a SSS snapshot of 1 year either. It's not that Basallo's superhuman for 2024.  It's contextualizing what his 2024 stats mean when you account for some type of developmental curve based on age.  The odds may prove wrong for any specific data point (i.e. Basallo), but historic norms of development mean something too.  You were putting the burden of truth on those defending historic norms.  In reality, those who don't buy the norms should prove their point.  When that's not done, people pick nits...
    • I don't see any issue with an innings limit. Let him pitch the next two months as an opener. Ramp him up again in September. Let him loose in October.
    • Crochet in June. 36 IP, 27 H, 6 BB, 56 K Doesn’t look like he’s getting tired to me.   Innings limit?   Unless Crochet is asking for a limit, I say there is no limit. Did someone put an innings limit on 23 Chris Sale (78 to 180), 39 yo Verlander (0 to 175) or a 23 yo Jim Palmer (0 to 181)?
