That’s one of my main concerns. I would rather sign Rodon in that scenario because of his talent but I worry about this a lot.

Setting aside owner involvement, I’d still rather sign the Bassitt deal. The Ray and Gausman contracts are gonna look like steals compared to him.

Hard to imagine the Mets allowing deGrom, Bassitt and Walker all disappear in free agency.

Easier to imagine them replacing with Rodon, Senga, and elevating Peterson full time to the rotation.

Doesn't Bassitt require the signing team giving up a draft pick?  If that is the case then I am a hard no.  We  need to keep building.  We re not at a win now stage quite yet and Bassitt would not be the guy to put us over the top.

I don't think so.  I think the player has to be on a team more than a season before this comes into play.

He was tendered a qualifying offer and declined it.  He would cost a draft pick.

As for the draft pick, I love me some draft picks but this isn't a first round pick, it's a late second round pick.  You need to evaluate it's worth.

It’s a second round supplemental pick.  Probably somewhere around 75 or so.

The O's almost made the playoffs last year, have a full year of the ROY runnerup, should have a full year of the #1 prospect in the majors and the top pitching prospect should be in the majors most of the year.  If 2023 isn't a year to compete and go for all the marbles, when is?  I believe signing Bassitt would require giving up the O's 3rd pick.  We're not talking about giving up a 1st round pick for Ubaldo.

    • I’m not against getting Crochet, but I see him as more of a trade that’s looking into 2025 and beyond. Crochet is likely to get rested in the second half or even put on the shelf in September.  If it’s about getting pitchers to help with a deep postseason run then Elias will have to make additional moves.  Crochet is already near double the amount of innings he’s ever pitched over an entire season. I don’t see it likely he pitches 200 innings this season after his injury history.
    • What I have heard about the batter's eye is that it is made of some kind of mesh and at certain time of day, light shines through it.   This was from a Darrell Hernaiz interview a couple of years ago.   Also, the lights aren't that good, per Hernaiz.
    • This is probably a good pivot if nothing else but the "better" pitchers on the market don't pan out. Connor Norby would seem like a player the Cubs would want. If we are willing to take on the salary. Do the Cubs really think they are contending in 2025 or 26? Hell, maybe they can add in Drew Smyly. Especially if DC looks iffy to actually make it back this season.
    • ??  That's what people mean when they say age matters. Not just based on a SSS snapshot of 1 year either. It's not that Basallo's superhuman for 2024.  It's contextualizing what his 2024 stats mean when you account for some type of developmental curve based on age.  The odds may prove wrong for any specific data point (i.e. Basallo), but historic norms of development mean something too.  You were putting the burden of truth on those defending historic norms.  In reality, those who don't buy the norms should prove their point.  When that's not done, people pick nits...
    • I don't see any issue with an innings limit. Let him pitch the next two months as an opener. Ramp him up again in September. Let him loose in October.
    • Crochet in June. 36 IP, 27 H, 6 BB, 56 K Doesn’t look like he’s getting tired to me.   Innings limit?   Unless Crochet is asking for a limit, I say there is no limit. Did someone put an innings limit on 23 Chris Sale (78 to 180), 39 yo Verlander (0 to 175) or a 23 yo Jim Palmer (0 to 181)?
