When I saw him with the Mets at the end of the year, the arm looked a little slow and the velo was 92-93. The baseball savant numbers are better than I thought. I am curious why Givens, and who goes this time.

Already pretty solid.

Doesn't give up a ton of HR's.

Most of them were to Left-Center.

May benefit from the wall.

Yeah. I thought about that right after I said that. I was referring to pen arms. My bad.

It does make me think we’ll trade a reliever, though. Depends on what they want to do with the surplus starters like Voth, Watkins, Wells, Hall, Akin and Baumann. It’s interesting.

All good things, sure. I was thinking what shaping and sequencing suggestions they might want him to work on. Or if there is a mechanical tweak they have in mind.

I like this move.  We can put Givens back in the flexible role he played in the Brach/O’Day/Britton years.  He can give you two innings if needed, and can throw in both low leverage and high leverage situations.   Good guy, and one of the best defenders at his position.   And the price is very decent.  Our bullpen depth is back where it was before we traded Lopez.  Solid move.

I like it. He's not a setup guy anymore really but it fills a pretty huge hole left by Lopez. He props up the middle-late relief area occupied by Krehbiel and Baker, two guys who can be good but a little squirrelly.

No real harm here, and will be fun to see him back.

This is where I'm at. He's a solid set up guy who is better than Krehbiel.

Right now I see these guys in the pen as of today:

Bautista
Tate
Perez
Givens
Baker
Akins

Potentials:
Politi
Wells
Voth
Krehbiel
DL Hall (I think he's going back to AAA to start)
Vespi
Baumann

It will take an injury to get Krehbiel on the team. He has an option.

Kremer, Bradish, Gibson, Grayson, Wells

Bautista, Perez, Tate, Givens, Baker, Akin, Politi, Voth

Politi’s chances may be all about health in the spring. Could take an injury from someone to make it. Also they will still add another SP. So one more off.

Yawn...like our other moves

IMO Givens is a good player who fills an actual hole. Obviously he is not the big ace signing but this is quite a bit more than a yawn for me. This might be my favorite move of the offseason so far, although obviously Gibson and Frazier are a low bar.

With legit starters drying up I guess the plan now is to be creative about bullpen usage instead.

Old Hoss Radbourne nods sadly.

Glad to see this as another incremental investment.     Growing up in the 80's relievers were maybe 25% of pitching, now they are like 50%.     Givens may be Kyle Gibson of relievers, but you can do worse, and you can buy more quality with multiples of the MLB minimum.

    • If we are good enough to earn Phillies games, moving through the Yankees might take care of that one.
    • Gunnar is an exceptional player, with the room to improve his game defensively. Right now, Bobby Witt is the best player in baseball IMO. So there you have it. These guys will be compared to each other for many, many years going forward. Next year, Gunnar may have the edge. But right now? No doubt, it’s Witt.

    • Yeah.. are the O’s even aware field box seats behind home plate (section 42) going for $67 and upper box seats going for $18 on Vivid and fanimal yet they upped their prices back up, really foolish.
    • Joey Ortiz beat Adley Rutschman in fWAR this season, hopefully starting a good vibe of Elias getting what he paid for.
