Cole Irvin 2023

It was a pleasure watching Cole Irvin today.  He navigated 5 innings in 61 pitches, every one seemingly in or near the strike zone.  (He did give up two doubles on 6 more pitches before being pulled in the 6th.) The entire game was played in 2:06, largely due to Irvin’s quick work.   His repertoire isn’t overwhelming but he’s got command of everything and he works fast.  He looks 100% ready for the season.

He gave an in-game interview after he was pulled, and seems like an easygoing, likeable, intelligent guy.   Jim Palmer mentioned that he was impressed that, when he talked with Irvin previously, Irvin knew so much about Dave McNally, another lefty who wore Irvin’s no. 19.  Irvin responded that he likes to know the history of the teams he plays for.   Pretty cool.

Irvin’s got a lot of great qualities, he’s the perfect mold to eat up a ton of innings and take advantage of the defense and LF wall. He’ll definitely be a fun pitcher to watch for the reasons you said. He’s been working on his breaking balls this spring, he hasn’t been getting more K’s so far but if the Orioles can unlock a little more swing and miss in his game he could be very valuable.

It’s going to happen plenty while he is here. Not sure why we should feel the desire to avoid it right off the bat.

Not as much as before.  We only have one more three game series vs them in Fenway after the first series the rest of the season.
