Poking around for flaws, his ~9/1 K/BB is about fourth worst YTD among 90-ish qualified bats in league.     That's not unexpected given the extreme youth.

A great first few weeks, and basically meeting my prior hopes he does some Carlos Delgado profile type things.    We'll see how Elias plays the player maybe hitting himself away from the tools of ignorance type things.

Good Meoli article on Basallo with lots of quotes from Delmarva's hitting coach:

Quote

“He’s so talented,” Bunselmeyer, Delmarva’s hitting coach, said. “He’s the quickest learner I’ve ever been around. He might just tear through the league.”

Quote

“One of the big things with Basallo is if he’s controlling the zone, he’s one of the most dangerous hitters probably in the organization,” Bunselmeyer said. “He has good hand-eye and that ability to make contact on tough pitches that he just wants to go make contact. He sometimes will put himself into a bad spot where he’ll swing at a bad pitch and let it kind of build, swing at another bad pitch. It’s like, ‘Hey, he didn’t beat you, you beat yourself in that at-bat.’ ”

Quote

“It was just completely different,” Bunselmeyer said. “We worked on a couple different things that year, and he’s just so naturally talented that we probably could have done nothing and he would have been successful. But just to his credit, he wants to be the best player ever.”

Because of the deep rapport and bond built over years with the Orioles.

Or that the Yankees spent 4M on a SS that year.

Haha.  Of course, he was signed in 2019, this regimes first J2 class so building a years long rapport was impossible.  You’re right, the Yankees couldn’t sign all the big fish so we lucked out.

Of course, he only got 1.3M so consensus said he was good but not one of the really top players.

According to BA, in Jan 2021 the big NYY signing was Hans Montero at 1.6 M.  2020-21 MLB International Signings Tracker (baseballamerica.com) And they didn't sign anyone on MLB's top 30 that year.  Makes me think Montero was a late riser that they preferred over Basallo. The $4 M SS was Arias in Jan 2022.

New York Yankees | (Signing preview, reports & video)

Hans Montero, ss, Dominican Republic (scouting report) - $1.6 million
Fidel Montero, of, Dominican Republic
Ramiro Altagracia, of, Dominican Republic
Kleiner Delgado, ss, Venezuela
Johan Ferreira, 3b, Dominican Republic

Correction.  Basallo was part of our 2nd class in 2020.  Maikol Hernandez was also in that class and he also was connected to other teams (Pittsburgh and St. Louis) so the Orioles took the best leftovers they could get those first 2-3 years.    It seems like the Braylin Tavera class was the first year they had really gotten roots down there.
