The 2024 Trade Deadline

I doubt this is in the cards with Hays returning to form. Red hot since coming back from injury.

Also Mateo could serve more of an OF role if Mayo or Holliday comes up.

Bottom line is we have a surplus of position players, not a dearth. Elias knows this and I don't think he'll spend resources to get more

A RH CF option would be the type of move that we would make if there was still an Aug 31 waivers trade deadline. I don’t know if we have the 26 man spot to carry that through August.

Well you'd have to think that if the Orioles were to add another OF, that they would rid themselves of Hays or Mullins.

Griffin Jax is a BP arm that should be high on the list.

Ryan Walker is another guy.

I think there are plenty of under the radar arms worth looking into.

Guys that won’t cost a ton but greatly help the team.

They’d send Stowers down. A RH CF option fits much better than he does with our current roster construction.

As it stands now, rosters expand from 26 to 28 in September. You’re only allowed to add one pitcher. So we’d add a bullpen arm and Mayo.

So if Mayo is the RH bat, then we don’t need to acquire one. It’s just do we have a chance to see Mayo up here and evaluate him before the trade deadline?  If not, we may elect to go the RH bat via trade. Maybe a JD Martinez. Maybe bring Hicks back on Aug 31 just to be a postseason RH bat.

This is a year where the August trade deadline that used to be around would really help us.

Not sure what Suarez will be doing in September leading into the playoffs, but if we see Kremer or Irvin in a playoff game, the game is probably already lost.

Irvin has been the O's 2nd best SP this season by quite a bit over Gray Rod.  Not sure why it would be a failure for him to start a playoff game.

I tend to agree with this. I was actually thinking - trade for Evoldi, have a playoff rotation of Burnes, Bradish, Evoldi and Irvin with Grayson as a high leverage reliever.

By quite a bit?  Lol

Not much out there remotely supports that.

Trading for Luis Roberts (26) just doesn't 'feel' like an Elias move.  Yet, with that said, there is still a small chance that it could happen.  Some key points to consider:

His injury history---

Hand — Aug. 18, 2020
Illness — April 27, 2021
Hip — May 2, 2021
Groin — April 21, 2022
COVID-19 — May 24, 2022
Illness — July 15, 2022
Wrist — Aug. 12, 2022
Hand/Wrist — Sept. 15, 2022
Wrist — Sept. 24, 2022
Hamstring — April 29, 2023
Hip — May 23, 2023
Calf — July 10, 2023
Finger — Aug. 9 2023
Quad — Sept. 2, 2023
Knee — Sept. 24, 2023
Hip — April 5, 2024

  • When he's healthy, which has thus far been a serious impediment in his career, Roberts is an All-Star-level player.
  • The W-Sox are believed to be actively shopping him and everyone else on the roster.
  • Roberts strikes out too often and doesn't walk as often as one would like but steals bases (15/20), has a lot of power (30+) and an .823 career OPS in 381 games.
  • We could use a real upgrade in CF, allowing Cowser to remain in our large LF, and add a potent right-handed-hitting bat to a lefty heavy lineup.
  • We have other needs which would seem to take priority over acquiring a hitter, especially like Roberts.  That doesn't mean it can't be done, but it could once those other needs are filled.
  • Roberts' contract: He's signed through 2025.  He's earning 12.5M this season, 15M next season, and has two 20M team options for '26 and '27.

IMHO we will not pursue Roberts, as tempting as he is.  The injury history makes him too risky, and if we are seeking a (preferably young) RHH outfielder, we can look elsewhere without the same risk.

I can understand looking to add someone like Bader or Pham (ignoring whatever clubhouse concerns for Pham) if they want a righty platoon CF and want to prioritize defense. But I don’t really see them worth giving up much. They could instead:

1) Play Mayo (or Urias) at 3B, Westburg 2B, Hays LF and Mateo CF; or

2) Play Westburg 3B, and Norby/Hays/Mateo at 2B/LF/CF, with either Norby at 2B and Mateo in CF or Norby at LF with Hays in CF.

So if you add a Bader or Pham for CF, the defense is definitely better but not the offense - and potentially to offense is worse, if you’d otherwise be getting Mayo in the lineup. And you’re losing opportunities to get Mayo or Norby MLB experience, which is a cost to their development. It’s a very marginal upgrade IMO, and not worth it given Bader/Pham will probably require more than a flyer type prospect. The Mets will want to pay down Bader’s deal for a better prospect, and Pham is on a cheap deal.

It really only makes sense if they absolutely cannot tolerate Mateo or Hays in CF.

G Rod is the Mountcastle of pitchers.  Lots of pretty charts, RL results, not so much.  G Rod seems to lack that bull dog mentality to make it thru the 6th or 7th inning.  In a big game, G Rod will likely have to exit after 5 innings with lots of flashy Ks and impressive velocity.  Irvin will go 6 or 7 with less Ks and get the job done.
