Is Matt Wieters >Adley?

I do feel like Adley is out of shape or at least has gotten more out of shape than usual. That’s part of the reason I think he’s hurt…not working out as much.

If he is healthy and the slump is this bad, I’m ok questioning whether or not the new GF(ie the distraction) is part of it. Is he putting everything into the game that he should?

Adley has been in a horrible almost 4 month slump. Before that, he was the WAY BETTER offensive player.

But I pose this question: What does it matter if Rutschman turns out to be worse than Wieters?

Matt Wieters was drafted almost TWENTY YEARS AGO. No one in this org had anything to do with him being on our roster. HEck none of our current front office was even here for his entire Orioles' career.

Wieters' bWAR was 13.3 through his first 4 seasons (2009 - 2012).  It ended at 18.3 after his last season in 2020, so he was basically ineffective for the last 8 years of his career. Adley's bWAR is 13.1 through his first 3 seasons.

So it isn't like Wieters didn't have a strong start to his career just like Adley did.  I think the concern that folks have is that the rest of Adley's career will play out like the rest of Wieters' career.  It seemed very unlikely halfway through this year, but this has been one hell of a drop-off.

And after Wieters never lived up to expectations, it is definitely a fear that we may be reliving this again.  Let's hope this second half was just an aberration.

Allowing a bad half a season, without having the info of why, to totally change your view and expectations of a player is foolish…especially when that player was the best at his position prior to that slump.

Questioning whether or not the new GF is a distraction is one of your sillier takes, SG.

Why is that silly?  You don’t think off field distractions happen to athletes?

It’s one thing to have a slump. It’s another thing to be bad for a while because of injury.

But if he is just bad for this long, with no reason behind it, it’s entirely fair to wonder if there are things outside the lines that are bothering or distracting him.

A relationship can obviously be one of those things.

    • There’s like 5 threads discussing Adley’s offensive decline in the second half, so I’m not going to repeat what I’ve said elsewhere.   This thread asks about Rutschman vs. Wieters.   I still think it’s quite likely (75% or more) that Adley will have the significantly better career.   But we’ll have to see what version of Adley shows up in 2025.    I hate the fact that suddenly this question isn’t ridiculous.
    • Agree with the sentiment and if the overall point is we don’t have the pitching depth other teams covet to get someone like Erceg, that is 100% valid. that said I do like the Dominguez trade as Hays had next to no value. Would love if in the post Mortum presser Elias does someone actually asks him about his draft philosophy. It seems like it gets discussed on here all the time but he is never asked about it. We’re now counting on Trevor Rogers to start for us next year or we traded away 2 of our better hitting prospects for nothing.
    • Lumping in Soto and Dominguez with Jimenez and Rogers really isn't being honest here. Soto got off to a bad start but turned it around in a big way.  Dominguez had some lumps.  But if you factor in that adding Dominguez and Soto allowed us to cut Kimbrel, it's an overall positive.
    • If you don't think Gunnar has much fire to him, I'm not sure what you've been watching.
    • I don't know what the factors are in his regression over the second half. I sometimes wonder if the game becomes less "fun" now that it is a job and it's difficult to maintain the enthusiasm over the long haul. Whatever it is, why is he still batting near the top of the order?
    • Disagree with the premise of this post. He had very good statcast numbers in 2023. He didn’t give up homers last year and had a high K rate. His FIp was 3.3 last year, far lower than his ERA. His xERA was also over a run less. The issue was the walk rate. Could he get that down?  If so, he could be a top end high leverage guy. There was a lot to work with and a lot of reason to expect improvement.
