Sometimes I regret being an Oriole fan

Orioles fan, Bills fan, Sabres fan. Pretty sure sports fandom has made my life LESS fun. Watched the 83 World Series as a 7 year old. Been all crushing failures at the end since.Ā  Blah. Too late to not go down with the ship now. Go O's foreva.

I became a fan during the 71 World Series.Ā  71-83 was a great time to be an Orioles fan.Ā  Ā Not as much since then.Ā  I still think this core of young players have a lot of talent.Ā  I hope some changes are made during the off season.Ā  I'm excited for Sarasota this March already.Ā  The Orioles winning another World Series in my lifetime is in my top five of this things I want to happen before I die.Ā  I'll get myself upset all next season as well.

Baseball is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

The playoffs losses in the late 90s killed me. That is when I was a kid and the Orioles were my favorite thing in the world.Ā

The recent flops hurt, but not as badly. I have basically been conditioned to expect the worst. I suggest all of you do the same.

I fully expected this and it still sucks. I guess the worst part is that the seasons over and Iā€™ll miss having them to watch basically every night. Itā€™s something missing from my routine again.. until March.Ā

I am sorry that so much of my life has passed with so little return on investment.Ā  3 wins in the ALCS since 1983, and none since 1997.Ā  10 straight playoff losses.Ā  Wow.Ā  Think about how much time has passed.Ā  I was 8 when they won the World Series and I will be 50 next year.Ā  And the one constant over all of those years.....my favorite team never coming through.Ā  Short of a total rebuild all the way through the organization (including everyone in a management and coaching position), a complete change to the hitting approach, and serious in-season mental help for every player, there is nothing they can do to be any better next year or in the postseason.Ā  Whether Pollyanna or Negative Nelly, you all are the best for always being here no matter what.Ā Ā

Born in 1970, been an O's fan all my life even though I haven't lived in Balto area since I was 18. Never in a million years did I think 1983 was the last WS win I'd see in my lifetime. I hope I have a few more years to get one.

All my teams Orioles, Cowboys, Rockets, haven't won championships in a long time. Praying it happens for one or more of them again while I am still around.

Iā€™m old. Iā€™ve been an Oā€™s fan for the last 50 years. Always will be. But it takes leadership with the right vision to assemble and guide these teams to greatness. I donā€™t think that vision prevails today.

I know itā€™s not a popular opinion, but having a bunch of sub 250 hitters is not a great philosophy unless they bring something else outstanding to your team. A superior defender and a premium defensive position is one example. Mark Belanger is a prime example. SS, hit 210. Was absolutely without peer defensively. OK. He was a vital cog on some great teams.

Speed. Put pressure on a defense. generate runs. Make the opposition make mistakes. Bunt for base hits. Steal bases and put people in scoring position. Hit behind the runner. Nothing good happens when you canā€™t put the ball in play. defense. Earl Weaver would say, if you canā€™t play defense then you canā€™t play.

Earls famous saying, ā€œpitching, defense and the 3 run HRā€. Yes, he had Boog, Brooks and Frank. But all three of those guys were excellent defensively and they hit the ball. Consistently. He had Paul Blair, Belangerā€¦. guys who could also play excellent defense and put pressure on an opposing defense.Ā
Ā

I just donā€™t like the way we play the game today

I was 11 when the O's won their first WS in 1966. The O's went to the WS four times over the next 6 years.Ā  In the last 30 years they have done nothing but break my heart. I'm 69 now and doubt I will live long enough to see it happen. With new ownership there is some hope.

    • I don't think anyone is saying that they didn't try their best. The issue is that their best was found lacking in the playoffs once again.
    • I especially agree with this last paragraph. There are so few mistake pitches in the playoffs. Even today, I think we were about to put a 5 spot on Lugo there. He was on the ropes. Buts itā€™s the playoffs, he gets pulled and itā€™s match ups all the way down the line. We needed to be able to push a run or two across. Simplify things. And this is where it once again reminds of me of our playoff teams in the 2010ā€™s. I came away from them very disillusioned with the HR or bust. I really thought we were moving away from that organizationally with how we drafted and developed. To me, 2023ā€™s offense was so much more fun. And yet here we are again, HR or bust.Ā
    • Youā€™re right. John Harbaugh should have been fired about 6 years ago. But he has a lifetime contract and the owner has checked out on caring about the team. Lots of the empty seats are the norm now at both stadiums.
    • If we resign Burnes then Ā Fried and letā€™s say pluck off a couple relievers on the FA market. Now letā€™s say Uncle Dave has decided that the one freaking thing he wants in the time he has left is to see his team win the World Series because he wants it to be so. He says sure Mike ā€¦. Go get Ā a few bats also. Ā Not likely to happen but we have no clue how much or little Ruebenstein will spend to add to this core.Ā  Ā  Can we win then without trading one of three guys? Your whole premise is off because it is an absolute. There are plenty of ways this team can substantially improve without trading any of those three. It may also prove true that piece we covet comes at that cost.Ā  Ā  Iā€™m not saying your premise may not become reality and the cost getting a key piece they covet. It may be they can get that piece for say Heston or Povitch, McDermett, Bradfield or some combination of those type guys. I am just suggesting that keeping an open mind until we know what kind of money we will have to bring in pieces that do not cost prospects. Then decide what else is neededĀ
    • Weā€™re not even in the playoffs without the wild card. Seems like an odd rant.Ā
    • Exactly.Ā  I'm not convinced the hitting woes are here to stay because of the personnel involved -- at least not the young personnel.Ā  The hitting fell off for many guys this season who are clearly talented.Ā  We don't know why, but we have to trust the team will get to the bottom of it.Ā  What choice do we have?
    • Iā€™m not up on the latest analytical thinkingā€”I am really not that kind of sports fan anymoreā€”but walks? Ā I canā€™t imagine that organizationally they are discounting walks. Ā Our marquee young players seemed to distinguish themselves in the maturity of their approaches on their scouting reports and in their earlier play even at the major league level. Ā Contrast that with the last two days where we had like seven or eight Javy Baezā€™s (or whoever, feel like Iā€™ve seen a lot of clips of that guy hacking at air). Ā How many high fastballs did they swing through or pop up? Ā And nobody adjusted. Ā The Royals had them completely lost and the council of hitting coaches obviously couldnā€™t fix it. Ā I donā€™t know man, everyoneā€™s just regressed. Ā How many freaking times do you hear how itā€™s a ā€œgame of adjustmentsā€ and who really did that well in the second half, let alone the last two games? Ā They failed at that both macro and micro.
