Elias and Hyde address the media today

I keep seeing people saying this, but how exactly is the organization worse off, beyond any normal attrition of the prospect group?  Still plenty of up and coming young players, still flexibility in payroll.  Pitching staff still several starter candidates - and the closer returning.  If anything, Santander going to FA frees up a young player or two to get more PT (ie Kjerstad playing most days in RF).  You say the clock is ticking on Gunnar and Adley, and that's true. But you an just as easily say that they each (especially Gunnar) have another year under their very young belts, and are likely to come back next year and use that experience for further improvement (same for Cowser, Westburg, Grayson, Holliday, and others).  But we'd rather dwell on the negative take on that topic.

Actually I'm just not interested in continuing this discussion.  I'm sure the fates of Elias and Hyde will be a long term discussion point on this board, and there will be no convincing people of its inanity.  Plenty of people are adamant that Hyde should be fired - ridiculous and I'm tired of hearing about it already.  Plenty of people feel like Elias is in put up or shut up mode, or on the hot seat, or whatever.  Also ridiculous, and also tired of hearing about it already.

The lack of perspective and appreciation from people for what HAS been accomplished, due to what hasn't, is just annoying. 29 teams go home unhappy every year.  18 teams went home before we did.  I'm glad of that at least.  So, with all due respect to you and anyone else I've engaged with on the topic, I'm just going to bow out.

Thanks.

I feel like I'm being lumped in with some other, more reactionary posters, but that's fine. Have a good one.

Not lumping you in, but yes the last bit was a more general comment, not necessarily full directed at you.

Thanks.

I don't think we can have this discussion and stay within board rules.

I also think we would all be speculating about things we probably shouldn't.

I deleted the post. Most of the responses missed the point anyway so it was poorly made.  It was thin ice to begin with.  Should have left it alone.

Hyde press conference. You can’t hear the question but it’s about 8:55 mark about hitting with RISP. Said broad answer.

He talks about

experience

confidence

staying on the baseball

Make moment not too big

not be frustrated

not try to do too much

understand what pitcher is trying to do

experience

At end mentions the importance of Zobrist with the Cubs. He hit cleanup around the kids.

Really makes me wonder if Mike will try to add someone along those lines this winter.

So someone one here thinks the Orioles collapsed because Hays hates the gays and somehow that caused a disruption on the clubhouse?

I think its likelier Hays was just mad his playing time was being cut because he sucked in the first half and Cowser was out playing him.

But go with the gay hate if you want.  As long as we are throwing crap at the wall.

If Hays is that triggered by LGTB, that’s on him and his private problem . I’m not sure what it has to do with his teammates , smh

Sounds like Santander won’t be back. His bat will be difficult to replace.

Not really.   He hits HR, but that's about it.   He comes up small way too often for me to think we are really going to miss him.

About once every three weeks he has those really entertaining at bats when he fouls off like six pitches.

    • Jordan Montgomery or Paul Goldschmidt.    I think they are possible at Elias' favorite 1-year term and cost the Orioles about the same money they paid Burnes and Santander this season.    ARZ might have use for a Ryan with Christian Walker gaining free agency. Whatever deal in the Jackson Chourio ballpark is financially tolerable to all for Samuel Basallo. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/instagraphs/the-2025-free-agent-tracker-is-here/ Skimming the options decisions coming up 5 days after the World Series, I think Michael Wacha and Sean Manaea did well enough to not exercise their player options, and go back out there.    The Cardinals may troll the board by not picking up Kyle Gibson's mid-tier option.
    • Maybe as a 11 year old in the 79 series it just felt like Omar was getting on base like every time. You are right I can't think of too many that may be available but goodness I'm convinced this team the way they are constructed will not get it done without some different type of hitters to offset this just relying on power
    • I've said before that I'm expecting payroll to hover around 20th. But Elias didn't actually say anything.  I don't blame him and I'm not upset about it,  I'm just making an observation.
    • Yea now that you actually explained it in English, sure.  I think your entire perception is bs but I can understand why.
    • I have never seen him say anything accept in the Adam Jones podcast of all things. He actually was a bit interesting in that.
    • I thought Elias would take this team philosophy from a swing the for fences low OBP bunch to a group more focused on working counts, getting on base, and making contact. It appeared that way to me before the wheels fell off around mid season. I’m sure it’s been exaggerated here but we can’t seem to score runs without hitting dingers. Do you get it now?
    • I think when Elias says they will be smart about it, he just means that they aren’t going to spend money just to spend it, especially if they think it will be a bad deal in the long run.  When Elias was hired, he referenced that he wanted to build a “healthy” organization that didn’t have a bunch of bloated contracts that they would regret later (which was clearly a jab at the Chris Davis deal), so I think they look at all of this on a case by case basis and let their models/projections dictate what they think is reasonable and what isn’t.  Obviously, you have to go outside of your comfort zone at times if you want to get a player that you truly covet, and I have a feeling that with Rubenstein now owning the team, Elias will be more inclined to go more outside of his comfort zone than he otherwise would have with Angelos owning the team, as I think Rubenstein will be more willing to take risks to get good players than Angelos was.
