Orioles officially announce Hunter the Closer. *Basically*

BALTIMORE -- Orioles manager Buck Showalter officially named Tommy Hunter the club's closer, speaking to the right-hander during Sunday's workout.

"If we get in that situation, Tommy will get an opportunity to do that job for us," Showalter said of Hunter, who was widely expected to be Baltimore's ninth-inning man after this winter's trade of Jim Johnson to the Oakland A's.

Showalter didn't want to talk about the closer situation this spring, and some clubs, like the Tampa Bay Rays, never formally unveiled a closer.

"I think every situation calls for a little something different," he said. "Whether it's Fernando Rodney or [Grant] Balfour or Tommy, we have some people that we think have that potential also. We are going to start that way and see if Tommy seizes that opportunity and that job."

Hunter went 6-5 with a 2.81 ERA in 68 games last season, including four saves, and he'll try to fill the void of the All-Star Johnson, who posted back-to-back 50-save seasons.
