Olney thinks Jonny Gomes and the O's could be a fit.

I'm pretty upset we didn't land Gomes. He could have been a very effective half of a platoon. Our interest was probably only in a 1 year deal.

Would rather have a player instead of half of a platoon. Glad he is off the table and hopefully we pick up Cody Ross if we dont get Hamilton. Then again, Ross could still go back to Fenway.

I second that! With Papi entrenched as DH, Gomes playing the field sounds good to me!

Doesn't take too much talent to play LF in Fenway Park though and I'm guessing Gomes will still be used primarily as a platoon player. His splits don't appear to be anything special in Fenway Park. Kinda surrised to see him get a two year deal. Be interested to see the final numbers.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want him for 2 years at $3-4m per. It makes even less sense for Boston since he's forced into the field. I love guys that mash lefties and boy does Gomes mash them: a career .228 ISO with an .894 OPS against LHP.

In 2012, Oakland put Brandon Moss and Jonny Gomes in a platoon, Gomes put up an .868 OPS (333 PA) and Moss had a .954 OPS (296 PA) and they combined for 39 HR and 99 RBI in about as many PA as we gave Reynolds and Thome. That would be a pretty big upgrade if we were to pair him with Betemit.

But still, it's a moot point. Now that he's a Red Sox I can learn to love his faults.

I don't understand the people that weren't interested at all. Career .377 OBP and .512 SLG vs. LHP is not of interest to you? We already have half a player in Betemit and Gomes would have fit perfect. I'd have gone 2/6, but not more.

As for other options, we already do have Pearce on the 40-man roster. Career .343/.464 vs. LHP. Scott Hairston is a free agent. Not a high OBP guy (.303 career overall, .317 vs. LHP) but crushes LHP to the tune of a .550 SLG career.

The problem with that idea is that we would essentially have 2 roster spots devoted to DH since neither of them should be played in the field on a regular basis.

    • There’s a 0% chance Akin should get sent down if he keeps pitching the way he is. Tate is easily optioned before him at this point based off performance and maybe more importantly how Hyde has used them. Akin is probably his 4th most trusted reliever right now. I doubt he wants to lose him. Could that change? Absolutely. But right now it’s hard to see them sending him down - and they absolutely shouldn’t based on how he’s pitched.
    • I guess I mean if they don’t feel more comfortable playing him in RF than O’Hearn then there is an issue. I know it is more than just defense considered, but still.

    • As it was happening on Cole Ragans' bad night, I was surprised the Royals let him go I think it ended up ~47 pitches.    Jeff Passan type people are going to remember that if anything goes wrong in the near term.
    • Hyde's generally made negative noises about that concept in the past, I believe. Corbin Burnes is here 1-year only to keep taking regular season turns up to 33 until the best possible playoff situation is earned, and whatever the baseball gods have in mind after that.    I don't think Sigbot is going to cannibalize any of its Burnes in a hot race for a SP6.
    • Hyde already shut the 6 man thing down last night.
    • Cowser the veteran over Hays the rookie?  Got it.
