Great, great news! My, how things have changed with the perception in such a short time. Him saying that should add a little on top, if just for the PR around the league. Right now, I feel like just enjoying the news... whether it works out is for another day. AJ now potentially Matt - nice.

Awesome. I wonder if he has to drop Boras to get it done.

When I first read this, I thought you meant that you were wondering if Wieters would have to knock out Boras with a 3-punch combination to make sure that he doesn't screw up his staying with the Orioles.

It that were actually the case, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

The tricky thing in trying to do a long term deal now is trying to anticipate what the market price for a free agent will be in 2015. With every team in MLB having an extra $25 mm/yr to spend beginning next year, free agent prices may skyrocket. Boras is well aware of this, and in fact, he was quoted about it not long after the new TV deal was announced. So, you can be sure his asking price will be very high.

I'd proposed 6/$67.5 mm as a starting point for a discussion earlier in the offseason. I still think that's a good place to start. http://forum.orioleshangout.com/forums/showthread.php/127913-Would-you-offer-Wieters-at-least-6-67-mm-this-winter?highlight=wieters

Maybe we let him play this season out some and see what we are getting. If he is still on pace for a .245 year with 21 homeruns. Maybe we just let him play out the contract.

Here's the thing: I want Wieters here for the next six years even if he hits exactly the same as he has for the first four years of his career.

What's the alternative then? Don't pay the higher prices even though the O's will have the resources to do so? Besides, teams are already spending that money; e.g. Felix Hernandez in Seattle.

No, I'm saying the opposite. I'm saying we need to be prepared to offer Wieters something that looks pretty generous by today's standards, because chances are good that overall prices are going up over the next three years.

Do you think the 6/67 offer you mentioned earlier meets that standard? I don't think it's nearly high enough.

Boras will laugh at that offer, with all due respect to Frobby.

It might be nice for Oriole fans in their mind, but it is just pie in the sky thinking to get Wieters locked up for that number. It will never happen.
